That statue could've been up for the next 30 years and less people would've found out the history behind it than in the past 24 hours.

The place to teach people about this is in schools, not by having statues celebrating famous slave traders and hoping people use Google.

On a separate note Yoof and his 18 year old sister are currently having a full blown lockdown meltdown row over 4 chocolate rice cakes from Aldi.

They cost £1.50 and they have been eaten.

Over what’s app. About 100 messages in last 10 minutes.

Two teenagers up by 10.00am - impressive. Casino can’t even manage that these days.

Or keep the statues and add some placards below to add some context and maybe even add some statues of civil rights activists, abolitionists etc. Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.

Bristol should have a museum informing folks how it became rich 400 years ago on the back of the slave trade.

I know nothing about the slave trade over here but it could become an educational centre and a tourist destination.

I've been to Berlin, Krakow etc & come away much more enlightened. New York has the 9/11 visitor centre.

Dubrovnik has a small museum highlighting the atrocities from both sides of the civil war.

Yon mon can be fished out & put in the stocks at the new gaff.

. Fair to say they need a break from each other.
I have been told winding them up is currently banned.

Our son and his GF are approaching that "need some space" time too.
I fully expect him to be coming home soon.

All joking aside, this "lockdown" hasn't been good for people's mental health and it has out a big strain on lots of relationships. Folk just aren't used to being together 24/7

Seems anything philanthropic can be forgotten. Just highlight the bit you don't like (note - none of us like it but it happened centuries ago - very different times. Folk were nothing like as enlightened, informed and educated as they are now).

Rudy is spot on. The questions asked about such statues might well lead to discussions on the revolting wrongs of slavery. If it's at the bottom of Bristol harbour, many a question by curious youngsters/people will probably never arise.

Thunberg was bad enough. Now more of the little cunts are out on the streets en masse causing mayhem in nothing more than a 'look how virtuous I am' parade.

Water cannon, deploy tasers, baton charge - preferably in that order.

Who said forget anything ?
The statue is there to celebrate his  generosity. What has been ignored is where the money came from.

Anyway have these protests fizzled out now

big clean ups going on where they’ve left shite

Does anyone know why the ‘R’ number has gone above 1 in the North West?

If it has which areas have gone above 1, are there any Government figures to show this?

Its here mate.

Mrs Sweeps 95 year old Nan has really suffered, she's had to go on to anti-depressants this last week, up until last week, she'd not had anybody in the house for about 10 weeks. She's pretty hard of hearing and can't see to sell, so even people "visiting" who've been in the garden haven't really been able to have much of a conversation with her. I feel really sorry for her, last week she called up Mrs Sweeps mother and said that she cant go on, and it wasn't worthy living anymore if she cant see her family.....hence she's now on anti-depressants. She'll not be the only vulnerable person who has had little or no contact with the outside world for a few months. I dread to think the mental and emotional damage this is causing, and that may not actually become apparent for weeks, months or even years with some people

It's terrible for her generation. The really sad part is those that have managed to preserve their independence have consequently had such a rough time of it, although obviously the saving grace is they've been able to be more effectively shielded than the poor blighters in the care homes.  All the technology, zoom calls etc are very hard work for the elderly and in any case they're a pale substitute for actual human contact.

In advance of lockdown ending I'd like to see testing extended to allow people to extend their family bubbles to allow the likes of Mrs Sweep's mum to properly see to her mother. That shouldn't be beyond the capacity to support?

My nan turned 98 a fortnight ago, she's doing fine, thankfully.
She lives in a little grove and the other residents all came out to sing happy birthday to her.

She says she's been a bit bored with not being able to get out and about as much, but she seems to be coping.

Much of the compensation paid to slave owners was invested in that new-fangled technology called railways. Rip it all up? Maybe not.

And Leverville in the Belgian Congo (as was) came from Lever(Hulme)'s investment.

As did Leverburgh in the Western Isles of Scotland.

Major beneficiaries can be found in the Tranmere region in Port Sunlight.

Are these ‘official ‘ figures?

The difference between the North West and most of the others is not even point 1 so why are Burnham and local media making a big thing of it.

Whereabouts in the North West has it gone up? , if it’s in a suburb of Manchester why should School openings in Bolton be delayed?

All this’R’ stuff is being used ‘Politically’ by people to further their own agenda, it’s all bollocks. We need proper factual information to be able to form our own risk assessment

One of 10 studies, ccording to Matt Hancock

Knobhead politicians politicising whichever study they want; fancy that. Burnham is useless.

Same burnham that would have had some say in the decision to allow the BLM protests yesterday in Manchester? Or a different burnham that cares about the transmission of a deadly virus?
