leigh white
Being a callow lad and noticing the trends of the similar youth at Butlins in Skegness from the E Mids and London, it seemed a step up to go for. We had a mod scene round my way with older lads riding about on scooters and pulling the birds at Tyldesley Rugby Union Club on Friday nights when you could get in underaged and get a pint and listen to soul music. Head cropped, braces on over a check Ben Sherman and reggae music took over the place.

Members Rudy
Me old man was and still is a mod, my mam is Jamaican. Throw in the skinhead scene with Jamaican music and that’s how they meter
Site Supporter Steejay Posted July 10, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted July 10, 2020 I had a skinhead in ‘69, second one in my school. Bolty was the first, and he wore it well tbf. And he kept it going... Mine was done by Foster’s on St Helens Rd, obligatory shaved parting. Cain’s on Chorley St was a popular barber for a lot of lads at the time. Those times will never be repeated. The clothes, the music, the edginess...BWFC OK.

MancWanderer
Just a bit too young to be involved in that scene but admired from afar the docs, the braces, Perry, Harrington, Sta Prest, etc. Influenced my choices later in life

peelyfeet
You old bastards. Rave / manchester scene late 80s early 90s was might time. Driving down M6 in a convoy, breaking into a warehouse in Blackburn or Warrington and dancing until the coppers shut it down. Lived in ibiza for a year in 1991, came back looking like a moon cat. Burndens Bogs
Just a tad before my time unfortunately, but the influences were filtering through to us kids at the time. I had the Tucson red Doc Martens, the two tone kex, the crombie, the Ben Sherman shirt etc etc. Just didn't have the skinhead haircut - we left that to the professionals We were in awe of the proper skins in the Lever End. No one took the piss at Burnden in those days. Happy days. Edited July 11, 2020 by Burndens Bogs

leigh white
The fashionable skin cuts on girls in that period looked dead sexy. Alas, glam rock came along and Hot Pants and the whole scene was history.

leigh white
Looking back, the youth fashion in those days changed from year to year, i walk around these days and the chav tracky wearing lonsdale cult must have been sporting the same clothes for 20 years. Tried to resist the urge to contribute after Bogsy and M commented. Too hard Bang on Ste. I paid for being the first with Paddy Roberts, believe me. He liked to break in his new canes on me. I still have calloused hands but that might be the wanking (just thought I'd get that in before one of my many detractors did ). "We don't want any of that skinhead violence at County Grammar". Silly old twat. He should have been there when the cock of our school battered Breightmets to a bloody pulp in front of about 500 kids the numb fucker. He didn't even know about the Christmas orgies in the main cloakroom with LB and JR. He did eventually expel LB when he walked in on the school gymnastics champion up her ter't taters in the history room (Dave also was expelled) Anyway, I digress. Bang on re Cains. I used to make the trip and get the shaved in parting. I remember an older BCGS lad (Leeds fan - NL) coming with me and asking for 'shaved in divots'. Cain was nonplussed. NL wanted shaved in receding at each side of his brow at the front to accentuate his beltin' mutton chops There might be a misunderstanding by the younger end that there was some sort of relationship to some of the nazi nutjobs around today. Absolutely the opposite. Loads of West Indian and mixed race lads part of the scene. Generally admired for their contributions to style and music and they were shoulder to shoulder with us in the Lever End and at Bolton Palais taking on all comers. We never even thought of it TBH. They were simply other Bolton Bootboys in the trenches with you. Shaws opposite the Griffin; Army & Navy Stores and of course Market Street in Manchester were sources of Docs, Levi Staprest and 501's, Bens, Jaytex, Royals etc. Later on Stolen From Ivor and others. I only get 5 posts in so had better read what else has been posted. Edited July 11, 2020 by bolty58

Aye, a lot of lads changed to Lee Riders because they lasted so much longer. Towards the end of the skinhead era when all the glam shite was starting etc., many of us had gravitated to wearing ex military bags chopped off about an inch above the top of your Docs. The predecessor of so called 'cargo pants' with about a dozen pockets more than their pale copies.
