I’ve never fired a gun in my life.  Reports say he was shot from 200 yards away.  No idea of the significance of that. Could anyone with a firearm in the US do that, or does it suggest someone more trained/professional?

Well if you watch any film the baddies often kill random good guys from much farther away however they can not hit the hero such as James Bond from much closer and with loads of them shooting at once. 
 

So it depends really.
