A View From The Other Side

I realise some of you may have zero interest in this which is fair enough but from time to time I like to have a snoop on OppositionWays out of curiosity. Thought it was worth compiling some together which I'll do in this thread whenever I get chance.

Seems like Lincoln have some pretty level headed fans but then one or two absolutely bitter fuckers.

Pick of the bunch includes:

THE BITTER

Quote

How about 10 points deducted for every £million of debt a club has?
Wonder just how low these perennial cheats would drop?

Quote
Bolton stayed in Lincoln last night. Not leaving much to chance.

No that was so they could rack up extra debt.

Quote

Surely we can't lose to these cheats?
Why are they not on multiple minus points?

Quote

I'd rather be us than them. How long do they have to pay their debt?

Quote

The simple truth is, as much as the away fans won't want to admit it, we lost to one of those vile clubs tonight. One of those that has spent beyond their means, and clearly continues to do so.

THE PRAISE

Quote

Good game. Shit result.
By the standards of last season Bolton should be pushing for promotion. But then that was last season.

Quote

Beaten by the better team. Good to see a big away following.

Quote

FT. Good game. Credit to Bolton - they did enough to control the game throughout, although we had some bright moments, especially in the first half. They also scored at exactly the right time and managed the game out.

Quote

Bolton also look like a really good side who should be in the top half of the table.

Quote

I have backed Bolton to win the league as I think they are a decent team. They looked like a very settled team that are used to winning.

Don’t know if it’s been covered but the corner just before their goal swung out by a country mile. Incredible the Lino didn’t flag.

There was also an incident where at one of their corners, their player who got a touch on it, had actually been off the pitch as it was taken. Should have been a free kick to us, but the ref missed it.

fucking diddums!

That's what Neil wants us to do. Pointing quietly at opposition players and fans. That'll shut 'em up. They'll think they've gone deaf.

Like Donald Sutherland in Invasion o't bodysnatchers.

Comments from https://yellowsforum.co.uk/forums/oufc-matches.2/

Advance warning - there's not really any funny meltdowns, or deluded comments here.

Pretty respectful forum and fair assessments of the game. Although I was surprised at how many of them thought they didn't play well in the post game comments. The result seemed to cloud some of their judgments because I thought Oxford gave us a tough game.

The main takeaway I got from reading through is how similar some of the comments are to ones that were made on here about us pre-January. They were particularly complimentary of Fossey.

PRE MATCH:

Quote

Bolton are going well at the moment, mainly at home.
Their away form is identical to ours so nothing to write home about.

Quote

3-2 home win ...again

Quote

This is one of those 'heaven only knows' matches.

I hope our approach being impossible to predict will confused Bolton.

Quote

When we played you up at your place, you looked terrific going forwards and were an absolute circus at the back (the game should probably have finished 5-4 if it wasn't for some atrocious finishing/final balls).

But from your recent results, looks like Evatt has sorted you out at the back? Fair to say?

Quote

Tough game, they're full of confidence at the moment whist we concede at least 2 a game at the moment. 0-0 it is!

Quote

Off the Bolton forum on the match day thread.

Seriously difficult game. Their midfield is one of the best in the division and they have a very tidy striker.

Quote

Also off (another) Bolton Forum:

"Last time I went to watch us at Oxford, Ron Atkinson was their number 4"

..to which the response was..

"was that before he became a number 2?"

Quote

This will be a tough game. We should win it, but the defence will more like concede

Quote

I'm wary of Bolton.

Friend who supports them is absolutely purring about the way they're playing at the moment.

A lot to do, but they could be the late crashers into the play offs.

Quote
They’re playing some amazing football to be fair, I’m more worried about their defence and keeper.
Quote

Really? 14 points behind us. They got a last minute draw at Morecambe on Saturday.

It will take some run for anybody below Plymouth to make the play offs.

Quote

Seem to remember Johnny A opening his account against Bolton in the eighties. A similar 5-0 blitz will do fine.

Quote

I have a bad feeling about today, they're in great form and I expect them to be the side that makes an amazing run to the playoffs.

We need to somehow stop conceding but think we will again today. We'll need to be loud in the stands, our lads need all the support they can get.

Quote

They found a way to beat Charlton on Tuesday night but by all accounts were a bit fortunate and Evatt was bemoaning
The fact that several of his players are fatigued and he will freshen things up.

Ahh a good goal from them, ball went out of play in the build up but the linesman was the wrong side of the players to see.

Brilliant game for the neutral. Their full backs, Fossey especially, the best players on the pitch. All the promotion chasing group are drawing at half except for Wycombe who are behind to Lincoln. Big 45 minutes coming up!

We concede the same goal every week.

Great for the neutral, but it’s very frustrating to see us so easily breached.

More goals to come, no doubt. .

2nd HALF

Something needs to change, not a single clean sheet in 9 games. I've seen no evidence to suggest that the full backs are good enough for a side challenging for promotion.

POST MATCH:

Quote

So, so, so frustrating.

Our soft underbelly has been well and truly exposed this season. It could have been dealt with with a CDM and LB in January but no.

A draw would have been ok. A defeat is very disappointing albeit against a form side.

Quote

That is a big, big defeat. Dropped to 7th, 2 teams above us have games in hand, team below us games in hand.

Bolton aren't out of the playoff chase either. Look a very good team.

What a dreadful day.

Quote

disappointed but I really enjoyed that game.

Quote

Thought a draw would have been a fair result but we go again at Charlton big game!

Quote

time for a change me thinks

Quote

Give it until the end of the season, see what Karl can do with the January signings and if it doesn't work out then we should part ways.

Quote

Folk getting suicidal about being 1 win from 3rd or 4th place......... seen far worse positions to be in!

Chill, long way till the end of the season.

Quote

Nice idea but KR doesn't know his best formation or players....and there is only 14 games left now, we're out of the play offs and teams are catching us and have games in hand. Going to be a fight to stay in the play offs now I fear.

Quote

The recruitment team have undone our season. We're in a league full of big fish who all had the funding to recruit what they needed in January.

Our owners put the money there to spend, and we left everything till deadline day, then didn't recruit the positions we actually needed.

Quote

Just got in to my car, and will be sat here a while, in this bottle neck of a car park, what a shithole.

Anyway as a neutral brillIant game of football, and some good goals in there too.

Before rambling on well done to Bolton Wanderers, for never giving up, and kept attacking when they could. They thoroughly deserved there win today, and wish there fans a safe journey home.

From an OUFC perspective the result is terrible, these are the games we need to win if we have any hope of a top six finish. Yes Bolton are in good form, but so are we at home! No knee jerk reaction here, just saying how it is! There glaringly obvious is the defence. We haven’t addressed it in January, and it’s going to come back and bite us on the backside I’m afraid. Yes we are in the top six currently, but honestly - if we continue to ship 2/3 goals per game we are not going to finish there. 9th or 10th at this rate!

Quote

9th or 10 th is where we will finish we are a soft team definitely not strong enough as a unit alot of good players but the big teams are getting going but still a good season . But you need a defence and a strong CDM and we are being sussed out lose at Charlton which I expect and we will find it a tough end to the season. Karl has sadly got the January window wrong

Quote

Bolton wanted that more than us today we were bad that's the worst inept performance I've seen from us for a while we just kept going sideways backwards whu send the GK up for a corner and take it short useless anyway I'm pissed off tonight

Quote

So frustrating!

We play nice football, but we don't take our chances, and always make the wrong decisions with our crosses, and we can't defend to save our lives!

I really wonder what defensive work is done during the week, because we have no shape, they get pulled out of position so easily, and concede such sloppy goals, due to sheer naivety.

And after good approach play, our decision making in the final third is shocking, and we were taught a lesson with Bolton's third goal, in how to make the right decisions, quickly and efficiently.

If we're serious about promotion, we need to toughen up, and wise up.

Quote

We have to go 3 5 2

Quote

Bolton looked fine without being great. Bakayoko looked strong all game and Charles is a very good player at this level. Their 5 I found very amusing. Absolute peak lower league centre back. Utter unit, will defend all day long, but was about as good on the ball as I am. Did the job though - we got absolutely no change out of any of our many set piece deliveries (apart from one, obviously!).

Quote

Very sloppy performance and two sloppy teams really.

Quote

Are we the only team to send up the keeper for a corner and twice(!) take it short?

Also, I thought their wing backs were the difference. Both scored and both looked to be brilliant athletes. I’d love to see a player like Fossey here, is on loan from Fulham?

Quote

We got targeted down the flanks again. L1 is highest standard it’s been for years. Make a positional mistake and usually, boof, it’s a goal.
Had our strongest possible starting 11 today so I’d call it a worrying result . Bolton have some great individual players particularly Fossey.

Quote

Funny game football with very fine margins. We had enough chances to win that, apart from their goals they didn't create much although they were in and around dangerous areas a lot. If Whyte scores when 1 on 1 at the end of the first half it's a different game.

That said I suspected we'd be in trouble when I saw the size of them. Exactly what we usually struggle to deal with but based on that indont think either team will go up as both too poor defensively. That number 5 for them was possibly the worst player I've seen this season, if he were only 6 foot 2 I doubt he'd be a league player.

Quote

Fair play to the Bolton fans, thought they were decent today.

Brilliant, cheers Mantra.

Enjoyed reading that, especially this gem - “ That number 5 for them (Santos) is possibly the worst player i’ve seen all seaon, IF HE WAS 6ft 2 I DOUBT HE’D BE A LEAGUE PLAYER “ 🥴😃

Cheers @Mantra

Appreciate you doing this, really good stuff mate 👍👍👍👍👍

As ever great effort in compiling. It’s like re-reading this site pre Christmas/ 2nd transfer window.

Very sloppy performance and two sloppy teams really.

🤡

They seem like a really decent bunch.  Praising our support and wishing them a safe journey home.  I'm not sure I could do the same after a home loss!

That pillock who reffed us yesterday has made some horrific decisions this season certainly in championship games I’ve seen.

some of my Rovers mates have highlighted him, seems he’s their Barry Knight. Made some shockers in Huddersfield v Stoke too.

I remember the name due to our ex keeper of the same name. Didn’t think he was too bad yesterday apart from being a bit fussy and thought Dapo’s booking was harsh too. Is he 1 away from a 2 game ban now?

On iFollow it said how many reds and yellows he's given over the last 90-100 games and it worked out something like 4 yellows per game

Quote

You‘re massively over hyping Bolton. Rotherham were miles better, Wigan looked better too, as did Sheffield Wednesday and perhaps even 10 man Portsmouth. Wycombe look much better than Bolton too. And these are all teams we’ve played relatively recently. I even thought Accrington, on i player, looked a match for Bolton. They, Bolton, will be wondering how the hell they‘ve got away with three points.

Arf!

Tbh, our goal power will get us out of trouble

We werent at our best yesterday

Some better performances early season where we didnt get more than a point

What he forgets is we can score goals other teams could only dream about

The third, especially, is a thing of beauty

i follow or quest

Just a small selection from them.

Fergo is optimistic

With 6 wins in the last 7, Bolton due a slip up, so lets make sure we beat them tonight to keep us comfortable in the league. Hoping for an entertaining match with lots of goals. 3-2 Burton 😀. I think anyone can beat anyone in this league. Look at Donny a couple of weeks ago winning at Sunderland.

everard not so much

Loving your optimism fergo...since current form suggests we could be in for a drubbing...our lads will need to be up for it.....and as well as being organised and staying disciplined, they will need to be prepared to be first to the ball, chase everything, put their bodies on the line to block shots and crosses etc. etc.
I'd like to think they'll arrive expecting another win and they'll play (at least the first half) with some complacency - Evatt unlikley to let that happen tho and certainly not for two halves...
I'll be delighted if we match 'em and come away with at least a point.

Fred Andrews doesn't beat around the bush

It's about time we turned up and put in a cracker of a performance, it's very long overdue.

It's going to be a slugfest. Hope we play positively or it could be a long 90 minutes.

Wimbledon forum looks like it was made on a Windows 97 PC and pages load like I'm on a dial up connection. Not even any topics just one big thread for everything.

There's only about 8 pages with comments from Saturday onwards and doubt there's much worth sharing but I'll have a trawl.

PRE MATCH

Quote

Valiant 2-0 loss tomorrow with lots of process praise. That Gills game is looking pivotal and I can’t say I have much confidence in Robo getting a draw there. Let’s hope the results flop our way on Saturday.

Quote
Good luck to anyone trying to get to Bolton tomorrow.

Quote

You mispelt Khan, the vagina

Quote

I think our chances of getting a point today are negligible. One to get out of the way and hopefully pick up no more injuries or suspensions.

Quote

a Shrews v Morecambe draw today would be mighty fine ensuring that bar a huge defeat at Bolton, we would STILL not be in the relegation zone,

Quote

Bolton 0 Dons 2, 👀free hit, week freshness,no mistake at the back,Robbo masterclass to banish from the mind the last 12 games without a win

Quote

2nd in the form table at home to 2nd bottom in the form table. And they’re on the back of a 3-0 defeat so will be fired up. 4-0 today one to forget quickly.

This guy above got it bang on the money lol...

Quote

It’s not a free hit as much as a lost cause. Bolton aren’t brilliant but we aren’t even good and have too many midfielders out to field a cohesive XI today.

KICK OFF

Quote

Wow we have 18% possession so far.

Quote

It appears we have agreed to let Bolton have lots of shooting practice.

Quote

1-0 Bolton. Well that's that for today. We have got no quality upfront and I cannot see us getting anything from today. In the summer can we please sign two decent forwards whatever division we are in.

Quote

Completely understand we are missing crucial players but that was about as shit as you can get. We look beaten before we even started today. They should have two penalties. Marsh could have been sent off. Nesta in midfield, what the hell is that about, just play three at the back. A whole week to prepare and that's what you go for. Cosgrove looks like the donkey Shrewsbury said he would be, unfit and disinterested. This has got 3 or 4 nil written all over it.

Quote

wow bunch of weak bed wetters - we were 3-1 down to this bunch earlier in the season and came back - fucking quitters for a fan base

Quote

and looking at the stats they've only had 1 shot on target, so have we, not sure we're out of this

SECOND HALF

Quote

2-0 now I hear. What is probability of us getting even a draw now?

Quote

Oh 3 - 0 down

Quote

So lucky other results going our way.

Quote

4=0

FULL TIME

Quote

Bolton were quality. I am disappointed but to be honest, Bolton were good and we weren't. Small changes could have maybe meant we only conceded one or two but they were just better than us in everyway.

Quote

I know there were all sorts of excuses but that last half hour was awful by anyones standards… two nil would have been ok given the context (Bolton are decent enough even before we lost our midfield) but I really didn’t expect us to capitulate like that.

Quote

Another men v boys … not strong enough, not skilful enough, not fast enough… Really think that to be brutal honest relegation, whilst not wanted, may be needed to stop embarrassment like this … could easily have been 7,8,9 -0 ….

Quote

Fuck it might as well put the Wealdstone Raider in charge.

Quote

Bolton had a 62 cap international who has been to the Euros and the World Cup up front …our front line was 3 loanees

Quote

Just got back from Bolton, what a fucking day out from hell!!! Started yesterday when I found out my 10.33 train which I’d paid an extortionate 60 quid for didnt exist, told my mate to get to Euston early and it was like an Indian station there were so many people there, we tried to get on the 9.30 but it was cancelled, were the last two onto the 9.43 and eventually managed to fight our way on and find seats, left at 10 and took 3 and a half hours to get to Preston, packed platforms then and just managed to get the train to Horwich and get in just after half two, the match was a disaster from start to finish then had to repeat the return journey with loads of pissed off Millwall fans who had their game called off at 2.15pm, the only gooo thing was in the chaos we managed to get an earlier train, even if a drunk Cormac was on it. Got to get up at 7.30 tomorrow morning for a christening too

Quote

Kell Brook certainly put the show pony in his place!

Quote

Anyone know who I need to send my reciepts to at the club to claim my refund? Fucking shameful yesterday, players out or not. No fight or balls.

Quote

Didn't we have 5/6 players unavailable and, with our fans-owned limitations on the squad, getting beaten at Bolton was surely not a surprise?

Quote

All together now’ you can stick your Bolton refund up your arse’

Not a huge amount to go off here, had to resort to some comments about Brook vs Khan lol. Have a soft spot for Wimbledon as one of my best mates is from there and he told me pre-game they were gonna get battered. Sucks how they had their club robbed by MK Dons too. An iconic team in the Vinnie Jones era.

As I say not a lot of comments regarding us, mostly they're just bemoaning the team, injuries and ownership I think. Got the few comments relating to the match, sommat to read, int it.

Didn't know where else to put this but just had a gander at the Charlton forum. Turns out their crackpot owner Thomas Sandgaard has given the job of Director of Analysis to his son, Martin.

https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/92891/give-jacko-the-job-he-got-given-it-on-page-31/p55

This post explains it better than I can summarise it.

Quote

It's my biggest frustration with TS, everyone on here says football isn't like Football Manager, well at our place it is.

We have a guy who was a supply Chain Manager at Zynex leading the analysts (and assume scouts) because he played for Enfield Town for a bit (TS's words) they then chat with JJ & TS and then TS makes the call. After we sign the player we then get TS on the OS talking about the players attributes and why we signed him... it's bonkers!

Thomas and Martin have predominantly lived in the US there is no way they can have any better understanding than professional football people on judging a player, I'd bet that me being the geek I am I'd know more about EFL players than them and many other fans would to. So it's fans playing FM - In fact they would have a better chance using the Football Manager database.

Aside from this madness it's the third plan they've come up with as we had the old four man committee, then the Black Box and now this. It would be ok if it worked but clearly our recruitment has been awful, muddled and without any clear strategy.

Lastly the same man making the final decision on our transfers is also our Owner, Chairman and CEO. He's trying to do four jobs and all from the US on a different time zone. No wonder this season was over in January. Meanwhile Gallen, our only real 'football person' and a once proven success is sent in to just negotiate the deals

Just another confirmation of how lucky we are to have FV in charge. I bet their owner has got twice the money Sharon has got but if you don't know how to operate in a savvy way then you're basically just playing roulette.

UTPBW

As I’ve seen said before, when opposition fans a slating us big time - it means Bolton Are Back.

I love watching Government Wanderers at the moment

Absolutely tremendous reading.

I love it when people hate us.

Gives me a right massive throb on.

Is spending half a mil on 7 players really classed as 'big spending' or spending more than we can afford?

We're getting 13k on every week, more with a big away following.

Bitter bastards everywhere.
