Xmas Dinner

What we having?

Sister in law (modest handful) and her fella split, in-laws in France, so it's just the five of us at home. If I'm honest, I can't really be arsed; it's an early Sunday dinner, and will have all the fannying around without the extra gifts and booze.

Anyway, kids want turkey. They didn't have mash last year, and tbf I didn't miss it; however they insist. The wife usually asks for gammon, and that's my usual contribution to a family meal. I'm looking forward to making gravy, semifredo etc in advance. Go forth good folk of WWays; inspire me with your festive fayre

Did Xmas in Vietnam a few years ago. Sad to say I missed the homemade Xmas dinner as it just didn’t feel like Xmas. Had a Xmas dinner when we got home in July as the first meal back with all the trimmings but no mushy peas.

I believe you can get meat and 2 veg in Thailand at christmas.

So did my wife. Academically smart but common sense is thicker than a whale omelette.
Try one and we’ll let this slide

Some friends of ours have booked into the local Indian for their Christmas dinner, they are going to the pub from 12~2 and then straight down to the Indian for a slap up meal (restrictions allowing of course)

Mates of ours did this for years till they had sprogs. I quite like the idea but to be honest I would never be arsed to go out on Christmas Day.

My mates wife is Lithuania so they celebrate Christmas and open presents on Christmas Eve. (That’s the USSR for you) And Christmas Day they go and get a curry and get sloshed. Not really seeing many negatives.

Never tried mince pies, don't like the look of them

Fucking hell another one.

Getting worse.

A good quality mince pie is special. Warm with cream etc or stand alone with a brew, or accompanying a port or sherry.

Greenhalghs do a great mince pies. I’m on the hunt for some proper homemade ones from a deli or cafe though

Many moons ago it did.

Now fruit, though suet in.

Presumably there will be vegan alternatives.

Allen's! Get a vanilla slice too whilst you're at it. Can feed 2 or just 1 if you're a greedy bastard like me.

I'm going to do some of my own. Sometimes shop ones suffer from pastry being a bit too short, and they absorb saliva instantaneously, making something akin to mortar in your gob.

Quite like a slightly firmer pastry, with a dusting of icing sugar on top.

Anyway, don't you mind the presence of a bit of suet given your conversion to vegetarianism?

Right, I've just googled suet. That shit sounds even worse than minced meat and raisin pies i imagined.

Glad I followed my instincts on this 🤢

What Is Suet?

Suet is made from the fat that surrounds the kidneys of animals (mostly cows and mutton). The fat is removed from the meat, clarified, chopped, and then boiled in water, which removes any impurities. Upon cooling, the water and fat separate and the remaining fat is suet.

You fucking bunch of animals

A northerner who hasn't had, heard of or likes suet?

I'm going to have to stop looking at this thread for a while.

And?

Do you eat meat or not?

If so, then you consume animal fat as part of that.

Never had pork scratchings neither?

Suet dumplings, made correctly, are pure heaven. Especially when soaking up a winter veg broth.

My mum used to say they "stick to yer ribs" which might explain the breathing difficulties i would have after eating about 10 of them.

This.

Suet crust on top of potato hash.

Which does beg the question why you eat a winter broth but not meat and spuds?

Weirdo.

More herbs and flavours in a broth.

corned beef and potatoes left to ferment is another planet, food-wise.

Is it Sam’s chop house in manc that does the exquisite suet steak and kidney pudding?
