The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

That'd be lovely

Things brighten up a bit - cheaper gas and Russia calming down - and Truss will think she dropped a load of acid in August.

I'll take a lucky PM anyday.

Just wait until Ukraine accidentally wangs a himar job over the border...

Don't think luck is involved here.

Some good work by the west in getting alternative supplies set up and distributed.

Also in supplying Ukraine with plenty of support.

Maybe it's starting to pay dividends, especially given the article about Turkey and them saying Putin wants it to end.

Just received an email from my energy supplier with their predictions for my annual spend based on the new discounted rates which start in October. They’re estimating a bargain price of only £4,700 per year

Received email from my energy supplier today.

Been told it'll go up by an average of £3.50/week

Until The Peoples Energy went tits up last year I was paying £40 a month DD for both gas n electric.   British Gas have just predicted £2,456 will be my usage, I live on my own in a two bedroomed bungalow.

Shell Energy have emailed me to say mine should only be around £2700 per year, which doesn't seem too bad, I suppose

£10 a day electric & gas at the moment, only have the heating on for couple of hours, that’s 300 a month, when it gets colder expect it’ll be £20 a day, £600 a month.   Add in the interest rate rise for those with mortgages, can’t see anything other than a deep recession.

No way will you use that much - unless you've got a cannabis farm in the spare bedroom

the last few days the temperature has taken a noticeable dip , Mrs Sweep has been suggesting we might want to flick the heating on........whilst still leaving the bifold doors open (24 hours a day) for the dog to come and go as he pleases...

My heating went on for the first time last night

Still paying around £150 per month for both. That includes charging the van.

Bargain.

Determined that I won't be switching ours on yet, but it's been getting nippy in a morning.

Ours is on a timer that effectively needs to come on three times a day once you turn it on. Does anyone know what the optimum efficiency is on that front and what sort of total time over the day would be considered reasonable? Will help massively when other half moves her office to our box room rather than trying to warm up the conservatory

Gas combi

Gas combi

Ah. Doesn’t give you many options really.

I’d suggest keeping the heating at 19 degrees more or less constantly but a combo would be inefficient doing that.

Buy more jumpers. Soz.

Was just thinking if there was a noticeable benefit to having it on for 15 minutes at a time instead of half an hour etc but we’ll just try and be frugal with it without really suffering

standard gas with a water tank

no baths, but prob 3 showers a day and at least one washing machine and dishwasher run

most rads have room stats

main stat for heating looks older than me - are they straight swap for a digi?

go

Yes, digital will be doable.

What kind of tank you got?

I'd suggest getting a Hive type system as it's digital and app enabled. Not overly expensive but you'd be in control of what's happening at all times

As for hot water, there's a chance you're heating water you don't use and it cools. That's all adding up.

Hive/digital will help you know when to heat water and when you don't need to.

Turn the temp down on your boiler as well. They are often set to maximum but you don't need 90 degree water.

I used to be a energy adviser for BG, it's a joke.  As I've said on here earlier I'm serious about having a Givenergy Hybrid Solar system put in and going all electric.  With gas getting higher in price per kwh than Octopus Energies Active or Go 12-4am tarriffs, this system should be worth doing.  Means getting a elec combi boiler too, but at £2,500 for a decent one fitted it's making sense now.

Chief at octopus some time ago expressed annoyance that ccl was also applied to green electricity. Don't understand the full detail of how it works so hard to explain.

Ccl has undoubtedly helped push companies towards green energy, but as more comes on stream then maybe they need to be altered slightly and placed onto domestic gas (which has no ccl). That would push more towards renewable.

I suppose the problem is that at the moment there is insufficient green supply to meet demand if everyone suddenly tried to switch.
