The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

This is a really interesting thread on how rising interest rates are going to be very bad for a lot of folk. Interesting that even double digit base rates back in the 80s doesn't compare to what we likely face.

It is going to be difficult, though it does beg the question about the advice being given to those taking out mortgages, ie are they warned not to over stretch themselves so that they have insufficient slack in their budgets in the event of rate rises?

Clearly the basic cost of a house is the biggest stumbling block!

19p income tax from next April, and scrapping the highest rate. At 150k as the average ww wage, we'll all be quids in.🤣

Just ban the sale of houses for 2 years.

Sorted.

I got a free smart meter last week. The wee box that come with it that folk obsess over is shite mind. Rechargeable and the battery lasts 2 hours tops. So that's been slung in the junk drawer.

If you introduce uncapped bonuses for bankers do you think that encourages them to offer good advice ? The Bankers who get these bonuses are not your branch staff but at a Corporate level ?
'Tarauin - Daddy says we can lend lots of money to the oiks. Bung some good deals out, we will make a fortune this year'

'But If it goes to shit later ? '

'We will have cashed out by then , be just like last time. See you down the Bar at 2 champers on ice.'

Mortgage offers are regulated, and financial advisers who offer advice are independent from them.

You may indeed have some bankers chasing the dream, but they still have scrutiny to contend with.

KK did say that senior bankers actual pay hadn't changed- taking that at face value it would suggest basic pay has risen to compensate for bonus caps. No idea whether that's accurate or not.

My point is about the quality of advice from the advisers not the lenders.

That said there are also controls with regards to how much a lender will let an applicant have.

WW put a graph up showing how mortgages are now a higher proportion of income, on that basis, you'd expect the advice to be even more cautious when deciding on a budget.

I can remember my first advisor and how categoric he was about allowing for interest rate rises etc.

Just been said that wholesale energy prices are down 55% from the end of August.

Fingers crossed this continues.

What happened last time ?

Mortgages and Advisers were regulated back then.

Probably a good thing. Stop me losing my shit when the nipper leaves a light on

I see they’ve reduced the tax to 40% for higher earners, they are going to get annihilated at the next election. Set of cunts deserve a couple of terms out of power.

And what's worse is that we never saw it coming from this brilliant set of Tories we've allowed to trample all over us for 10 years.

I'ts just such a massive surprise.

If only we had some visionaries who had a moderate inkling that we were being governed by a flock of jizzcloths.

Social envy.

We've all been given a cut, what's the problem with it?

Whether then policy does create the growth they want remains to be seen, and I'll reserve judgement on that.

Bitching about what other folk earn isn't for me.

Did the Mrs do the same trick whilst having windows open for fresh air, sitting in her smalls complaining it's cold , heating on full blast, oven preheating for 45 minutes for a 8 minute pizza and tumble dryer on for kids socks?

All in it together. Or was that yesteryear?

don get me started on fucking dryers .

“ you want towels don’t you”

all I ever get when I complain about the dryer being on while sun scorched grass turns brown outside.
It wouldn’t matter if that reader went round like a speedo, more chance of the dryer turning itself off by asking it than when I talk than her .

Been married for a long time and my missus has never pegged owt out. Way way beyond the point of ever getting her to stop using the drier for everything.

I don't have one. Mrs pesters for it all the fucking time.

Get fucked!

I'm tempted to make her pay the DD from her account not the joint. The only way she'll have some idea of costs.

To be fair to her we're nearly in October and heating hasn't been on yet. Its usually on mid July because we need a top drying quickly...

to be honest, I’m just glad my miserable tight-fisted demeanour when it comes to household appliances can now be masked as concern over the cost of living and to a lesser extent the climate change 😁

in reality I’d be moaning about it if it was 2p an hour , the situation just suits me 😁

We live in a small flat off LEL but not on the Concrete, with storage heaters. There's only ever been one switched on in five years. I pay 124 a month for lecky which I reckon will only go up to about 140 going off figures I've got from Eon.

Included in our rent is two hours in the estate laundry twice a week, so we don't pay for lecky for the washing and drying. Our water rates are included in our rent.

But it's in GL (unless Youri comes on and disputes it) and my local is the Morris Dancers.

So it's swings and roundabouts.

We have a dryer and have done so for over 20 years. But it only gets used for socks, undies, pj's, towels and bedding. Clothes shrink in them, especially stuff like t-shirts, polo's and anything not thick 100% cotton.
