There's no reading of it that isn't a dig at Coleman - 'if we had a better keeper we'd have gone up'. And I'm positive that anyone in his position would take it the same way. Not sure it's that relevant now though. Maybe makes it weirder that she seems so keen to shield the manager - but equally in her previous lines of work she probably didn't have hundreds of people analysing every word she said publicly. Fundamentally, what she said is bollocks though. We've bottled more than enough games with Baxter. I'm sure Coleman would have been pissed off with that comment, but he should understand that the comments had merit. The drop off between him and Baxter was enormous. Way too large to be considered a non-issue. That gap has closed now with the inclusion of Southwood. Again, Coleman needs to accept that. Big boy pants and all that. He's a neighbour of mine and I'm sure is a very nice guy, but there is no doubt that having him in nets rather than Baxter cost us. Not sure we'd have been guaranteed promotion or anything, but it certainly would have given us a better chance. He's unfortunate to play in a position where you're alone. Saying things like "our best striker was out" or "best defender was out" doesn't stick 2 fingers up at the replacements in those positions in the same way. Quote
Casino Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 Spot on But would I give him shit about it, would I fuck I find it interesting that theres chat we should start Southwood over Baxter cos hes a better footballer Fuck knows where that leaves Coleman...that more than his (non) saves was the issue for me We were forced into going long and amazingly, it didnt help us much Fairs fair, i thought he was faultless in that 30 minutes at Oakwell Absolutely top class Quote

With respect its a bit of a lazy generalised statement with no substance that avoids the topic of why we don't win the bigger games - our keeper missed some of them, so what?, ,Coleman didn't cost us many if any points IMO, certainly a long way from "there is no doubt" . If we had a play off final tomorrow, would I want Coleman to replace Baxter, absolutely not. But if Baxter had played at Wembley, we'd have still lost and I maintain the same about the matches we played in the league with him with maybe the odd exception if we want to be picky, as long as we expected Baxter to have a rare flawless couple of months in comparison. He's a 6'4 goalkeeper for a start!! He was a decent enough shot-stopper. Just a little rash with his decision making and we dropped a (fair) few points as a result. Nothing against him at all and think he played as well as he could for us at that time. Quote
boltonboris Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 The one that stands out for me was Wigan away. He came rushing out for no reason and didn't cover his angles. Baxter would nev.......... Quote

boltonboris Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 On topic, but off-topic. Those All or nothing documentaries really appeal to me. I love them. One thing I remember is the Arizona Cardinals having a real go for the Superb Owl a while back. They had a good team, of youth and experience and recruited well out of the Draft. They had a QB who was getting on a bit, but was having one of his best ever seasons. He broke his throwing hand and thumb in a collision with some guys helmet I think, but luckily they had a bye-week (where they miss a game due to the way the fixtures fall), so he had really intensive physio after a small surgery as they were desperate to get him back in ASAP. They had a backup QB, but he wasn't really at the same level (Baxter / Coleman vibes) - They rushed the starting QB back, but his production was down and they succumbed to a pretty lacklustre play-off defeat. Anyhow, nobody blamed the back-up QB for not being good enough to step up and be an equal and get the team through. The GM and the owner (the people responsible for the budget and the transfers) all apologised and took responsibility for not building a resolute enough roster (squad) to cope and get them over the line That's the kind of accountability high performing teams demand. It's the opposite of what you see and hear form BWFC. Too many excuses to excuse poor performance Quote

He wasn't helped by his run as No1 coinciding with the run of injuries Evatt has bemoaned previously, defence and other parts of the team chopping and changing, loan players coming in then getting injured straight away. Form dipped, anxiety increased amongst the players and Evatt on the sidelines, then in the crowd, none of that helpful to him. There was evident tension between Evatt and him in games when it came to the playing out bit, which he clearly was less comfortable with. As you said though, he did as well as he could and we only actually lost three of the thirteen league games he played, one of which was the collective shitshow at Blackpool. We only conceded one in the two other defeats. He wasn't great but he wasn't the stand out reason we failed to get into the autos either. Evatt clearly thought so, hence bringing in someone to be more of a challenger to Baxter than an occasional stand-in. I'd like to see Southwood get more game time personally as while Baxter is a decent keeper I don't think he's brilliant. Quote

Seemed to be a bit of attention at the front behind the goal. Be nice for the players to scrap on Evatt’s behalf rather than any fans still defending him. Quote
Popular Post Traf Posted January 11, 2025 Popular Post Posted January 11, 2025 It's not Ian's fault, even though he signed the players and told them how to play. None of this is on him, apparently. Quote

Ratwhite Posted January 12, 2025 Posted January 12, 2025 Trouble is, as mentioned previously, Shaz has publicly backed him, the board have spunked 1.2m on big head and now we're the best part of the way through the transfer window. It seems the "majority" now want rid, the board can only ignore this for so long, otherwise it will get "megson" nasty. By the time they do react, the season will be lost. The situation is sadly now (in view) fucked for this season.. I'll never turn my back on this club, it's in my blood, but watching the shit performances from players who we know are better, and listening the fall out/shit spoken by IE, is pissing me off to the point where I'm now ignoring it/them. I'm paying for a season ticket and have seen more home games on TV! Sure many more are doing the same at moment Quote
desperado Posted January 12, 2025 Author Posted January 12, 2025 This bit about the players, their mentality etc It’s an absolute mind-field of confusion, from every perspective, Evatt trying to absolve himself from this, as if he isn’t part of the problem is crazy. The most confusing part for me though, is the inconsistency. Take Williams and Collins for example. I imagine with hindsight some will claim otherwise, but every pre-selection for this game had them both as starters. And rightly so, Williams has done more than anybody in the RWB role recently, but yesterday, dear me he was awful! Same with Collins, no way you don’t pick him yesterday, but fucking hell he was anonymous, I kept having to check whether he was still on the pitch! So then I try to fathom out whether this is an attitude, application, competency, mentality or confidence issue, not just with them two but with a whole host of players we have now. I suspect it’s a combination of all the above. I’d like to think it’s more confidence related, rather than effort/application Yes they are largely L1 players and these inconsistencies are more prevalent, but I’m convinced a new manager, fresh voice and different approach yields better results. Game on now Only a vitriolic crowd response at home will shift him in my opinion as Sharon and the rest of the board need to see the level of anti-Evatt sentiment yesterday. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen. The next game at home v Cambridge is one we'll win fairly easily so the crowd won't be in protest mode. Then we have a midweek home game v Charlton where there'll be about 10k on, so it'll be a quiet one. The next proper protest will be when we lose away at Huddersfield in 2 weeks but the board won't be there to see that. Then we get back to playing the dross at home till March time. In a nutshell he's here for the season at least. Quote
Traf Posted January 12, 2025 Posted January 12, 2025 Here's a thought. Whatever is going on with Dion Charles needs resolving. Irrespective of the misses he makes (yesterday's was awful), given a run in the team, he's our top goalscorer. Charles plays best with Victor for some reason. Our record with them together seems to be better than without them. Charles is a constant threat, McAtee & Collins aren't. Quote
