Evening your majesty. Not sure if the Brexit comment is aimed at someone else?

Yes your link is fake news. Ask the experts on here. The NHS is fucked because of Brexit and the government nothing to do with an ageing population, covid, flu etc as your link suggests

But apparently it’s been fucked for 12 years, how does that work when Brexit was 6 years ago?

It's fucked "after" 12 years and Brexit. You are definitely taking the piss.

Im asking you guys, you seem to be the experts. If Brexit didn’t happen how would the current NHS problem be better?

Staffing issues casued by brexit?

Supply issues?

There'd be more funding available, and more nurses. What do you think?

Oh right, spider must have meant something else when he said the NHS was on its arse because of Brexit. 🙄

Not what I said.

I said that £350million a week was going to the eu and we were told it could go to the NHS instead.

Then It hasn’t happened.

The NHS is on its knees because of 12 years of dogshit governance

But £113billion would have sorted it out, that much we can be sure of.

It was heading that way

But £350mill a week would have rescued it.

So, ok, a combination of a shit government, a half decent idea handled like shit has proven to be a tipping point.

Brexit was sold as the saviour. Turns out it was just lies. Fat, steamy, turd-laden lies by ruddy cheeked lads with Union jacks.

It isnt one thing that needs doing...ive said numerous times that what would see the biggest improvement would be clearing folk out asap

But maybe we could open some of the numerous wards that are closed at nights and weekends

And dont forget, for every agency nurse we could have 2 nhs nurses and still have cash to spare

Frankly, if there wasnt a nurse shortage, i wouldnt be arsed about what they get paid (sorry Kent) as its just more tax i will have to pay...its just so obvious that we are going to have to up their money considerably

8 this year, 8 next, something like that, then we see if head count is going up

Don't apologise. I would feel the same way. Like you say - it's market forces. Nurses are voting with their feet. It can be an extremely demanding job both physically and mentally. It takes 3 years of study and 37.5 (non paid) working weeks just to qualify. When you do qualify you'll be thrown in at the deep end because there's a lack of senior nurses (loads have left). Plus you'll probably be doing at least half the work of one of the roles which haven't been filled.

The other thing to think about is the way the job has changed. There is a hell of a lot more professional accountability these days. And some of the responsibility that used to be taken by a Doctor is now the job of the nurse. There's quite often no Doctor on a ward anymore. The nurses deal with everything until they need something prescribing. Not like it was years ago when it was more task orientated.

Add to that a pandemic, what many perceive as shite pay and conditions, an underfunded service and you get people giving it up as a bad job. The amount of fantastic, experienced nurses I know who have packed it in is frightening.

But all we ever hear is "make savings" or "become more efficient" or "get rid of the managers" - from people who haven't got the first clue about the realities (I'm not on about you here by the way).

This is the first time in my life that I've been fearful that the NHS might just be lost completely. You can't imagine the chaos that would bring. Actually you probably can.

@kent_white the three year deal came in in 18/19 which explains the above inflation element for these years. I can't be arsed reading the whole thing but It doesn't say what 'nurse pay' is on the graph; so I'll assume it means top of Band 5 since this is where the biggest numbers are. Which incidentally hides the impact of removing increment points when the 3 year deal came in.

I got and continue to be, massively shafted by that three year deal! 😁

You're right - if it's an average then top of band 5 would be the choke point.

Is this real world or have you just read about it on the Daily Star website?

Remember the headlines about the criminal barristers getting a 15% pay rise and how it was outrageous? But the truth was far from it.

In 2002(ish) our Chief Fire Officer returned from a meeting with John Prescott and other Fire Chiefs from throughout Great Britain. On his (and their) return from London, they each wrote to the rank and file and reported on that meeting. Within the report it was stated that it had come as a shock to many at the meeting that Firefighters were so low paid and those at he meeting thought £30k was more commensurate with the work.

Well, the unions jumped in hook, line and sinker. They started a campaign for raising a Firefighter’s wages to £30k because, after all, the government meeting thinks that’s what we were worth.

Then the government spin-doctors did their stuff. “£30,000? That’s asking for a 15% pay rise, the greedy fuckers!”

The government, via the Chief Officer’s Association had provided the blue touch-paper and the union couldn’t wait to apply the match.

All I got was sporadic strikes, no pay and a baseball cap stating, “Fair Pay For The Fire Service”

Oh, and I had to work a week or two beyond my 30 years to make up the shortfall in pension contributions!
