The Managerial Roundabout

Shrewsbury potting Cotterill is an odd one,

Spurs possibly seeking a new manager around Christmas, not sure how he will do.

Gerrard to Leeds is rumoured.

Uri Geller to Wigan?

I know he’s not a manager but Standard Liege fans seem gutted we’ve got Fergal Harkin to the extent that some are saying he saved them from relegation despite having no budget. Sounds positive.

  • Are you serious? The guy brought us some fucking brilliant moments  that we’ll never forget. Yeah, it didn’t end up great but ffs.

Neville no longer calling the shots, and worse off for it, it seems. Butt and Giggs appear to be the last ones standing.

Butt and Giggs seemed hopelessly out of their depth, and that was when they got to the play offs! The state of them this season all made sense very quickly after watching that.

She’s no bloke🦾

Having seen Rooney interviewed whilst he was in the role at Birmingham it's no surprise at all that this hasn't worked out. If nothing else he's a really poor communicator.

Gary O'Neil is the absolute opposite. So impressive in everything he does. Couple of games ago Wolves were getting outplayed for the first 15 minutes, he calls over the midfield during a stoppage and spends 30 seconds showing them something on a whiteboard. Different game after that. Seems to be a very intelligent technician.

He needs to give it up, and be remembered as a good player and not a dogshit manager  - as said above, he doesn't seem to have very food communication skills, which is very important.

Who at brum thought 'let's sack our bloke as we are only 6th and bring in England legend Wayne rooney' ,   am sorry but as much as I loved him for England and hated him for united he was never gonna make a good manager at any half decent level.

I think he could be a decent coach for forwards starting off in league 2 but manager ,  come on had they not heard him speak before appointing,  I have read their idea was a 'dream team' of the England legend and the yank football investor as this would massively increase promotion, revenue etc.

Ah well, never liked brum since coming out the ground 90ish and the 'zulus' welcoming party !

He would at least pick some sort of Tips and Stuff up Shirly

If that was the game we won 3-1, I was there. I remember a huge roar going up as we came out.

A war cry echoing around the houses.

Rooney was said to be a success at Derby, but later it was revealed it was Liam Rosenior that was the real success.

The modern younger managers are all over the tactics and clear communications.  O'Neill seems to be a really good coach/man manager, looking from the outside.  And his replacement at Bournemouth, Iraola, is another one from what I've read.  Things have moved on a bit since the likes of Stuart Pearce was barking out orders to get stuck in or Keegan was saying just go out and enjoy yourself!

Didn’t Stuart Pearce put David James on as a striker once?

I'm not defending the Rooney appointment by any stretch, but on the sacking of Eustace, it was already decided before his final 2 games, which he happened to win (2 home games in 4 days v Huddersfield and WBA). The 6 games before that were 2 draws and 4 defeats, and none were against big hitters, and the owners were acting on that run when they were down to 12th after a decent start.

The 2 home wins that happened as his replacement was agreeing terms maybe put Eustace in a flattering light.  Of course, Rooney has now made Eustace seem like a great manager!  The truth is probably somewhere in between, he was doing OK but they weren't established in the top 6 or anything, they were well below PNE for eg, who's first dozen games or so also turned out just to be a "good start" (bottom of form table last 10 games and Ryan Lowe under a bit of pressure now having been the next big thing 2 months ago!).

To qualify for Europe too? He also had his daughters teddy by the bench for good luck

Hadn't heard, so just had a look.

Bugger me, he'll never kick a ball as sweetly ever again.

A lot of players who worked with Pearce the manager allude to him being a bit of a fanny who didn't like confrontation despite his 10 men image as a player :D

We had parked at the other side of the greenery (patch of land) and the police said we couldn't walk across it to the car and had to walk round, we said fuck it (fuelled by copious amounts of alcohol pre game) and walked across to be met by a large scowling mob, good job the cops were there or we would have filled 'em in 😁

Sounds like the game,  memory a bit shot but sure a grey police horse fell into a ditch at the edge of the land.   We got into the car thinking thank fook for that only to then see said zulus coming staring into cars in the traffic jam.   Oh happy days .

Lovely gesture as a dad but it was at that point it was clear he would never be a decent manager

Strange you should mention that, I'm reading Nedhum Onuoha's autobiography (he's got an interesting tale or 2) and he talks about that.  City needed to win at Boro on the last day, it was between the 2 of them who would qualify for Europe.  1-1 going into the 88th minute with City piling the pressure on. Then Pearce took Claudio Reyna off and instead of bringing on Jon Macken (striker) he brought on Nicky Weaver - who went in goal and David James came out of the nets and went up front.

According to Onuoha, he could hardly kick a ball, he was there to just cause chaos.  City got a corner and Onuoha checked with the bench if he could go up for it and Pearce said no - Nicky Weaver was on the halfway line, James was up front and City's England U21 defender (who started as a striker in youth football) was in his words "the only player in football history to have 2 goalkeepers in their own team playing ahead of them"  😀  Anyway City got a penalty in the 92nd minute, Robbie Fowler missed it, Boro qualified for Europe at City's expense and Boro got to the UEFA Cup final the next year!  (Onuoha thought Pearce was a very odd manager but nothing to what he thought of Mancini as a manager and a person, he couldn't stand the sight of him).
