That second season in the first division the year we got relegated we conceded loads of late goals and when its a goal! rang out you just knew we had conceded and lost... the Chelsea defeat from 3 up was the killer for my mate as we played football in the street listening to the events at Stamford Bridge when the 4th went in he chased another mate who was a red down the street for taking the piss... then on his return smashed up his radio!! :)

I was thinking of that Chelsea game earlier.

Would have been "ooooohhhhhh nooooooo" when we conceded (unless we were playing another local team).

Aye. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooooo" covered about half the air time on Piccadilly that Saturday afternoon we got gubbed 7-1 on QPR's nasty plastic pitch.

No it was 50p decimalisation was early 70s

I stand corrected.

In my defence, I left school at the end of the year, in pounds shillings and pence, and started work at the end of February in pounds and new pence.

Peter Jones was the best there was or is every likely to be. There were others in his day like Bryon Butler and Larry Canning but he was the best of the lot. Would have loved to have heard his commentary on Ritson's goal. It would have been Radio 2 in those days. Two commentators and one co-commentator, often Dennis Law.

Yeah Bryon Butler was class as well, and yes Radio 2 in them days.  I think you're right, they would have 2 commentators, they swapped half way through the half!

As I was usually at some level of football on a Saturday, and no Sunday games of course, I associate him with listening to midweek matches, often those glamorous European nights especially Liverpool.  So evocative for a kid growing up who'd never been near those grounds.

He was only 60 when he died in 1990, should have been commentating throughout the 90s really.  Apparently he collapsed covering the Boat Race.  I can't remember the words obviously but it always stuck with me how incredible Jones made Ritson's goal sound, as if it was one of the biggest/best goals ever, like a Tardelli/Agueerrroooo moment at the time!

Not one of his commentaries but you will enjoy this. The 40th anniversary of Sports Report and he presented it. Lots of contributions from other great names from that era... provided you disregard Stuart Hall!

Alan Boswell took over from Eddie Hopkinson, yes Terry, Roy, and Gareth from around 68/69, Alan Waldron later, Charlie Cooper just before. And Paul Marsh i think it was who took over the left back spot from Syd Farrimond.

Arthur Marsh took over from Syd initially, but was more suited to CB .We got relegated in 70/71 & Armfield took over bringing hardman Henry Mowbray from Blackpool who played left back in an uncompromising way. Don McAllister took over from Mowbray & we got promoted the next season.

"Goal action on 206..."

Think that was some incarnation of radio Manchester.

That's the jingle I associate with that era, that hold your breath moment while you waited to find out which team had scored.  I think Radio Manchester had more football and less music compared to Piccadilly.

In the 80s Piccadilly started a new phenomenon - a pre-match phone-in, with Tommy Docherty (Call The Doc). As much as he talked bollocks in hindsight (the Phil Brown of his time 😀), I loved the fact that there was some pre-match build up other than Football Focus/On The Ball and it became a staple of my Saturday lunchtime.

Later, James H Reeve (City fanatic) on Piccadilly with The Doc was a brilliant listen, still my favourite radio presenter (sport or otherwise).  City being crap in that era added to his unique delivery and humour, I don't think it would feel the same now that they win everything.

Arthur Marsh played a few games after Syd left.

We also tried one of our youngsters called Paul Hallows.

We then signed Henry Mowbray from Blackpool and he was hard as nails. Madman.

It was

Hopkinson

Ritson Farimond

Rimmer Hulme and……..

Bromley Byrom Hill Davies and…….

In no particular order for my first games.
I sort of remember that line up from the 70s but I can’t remember what I had for my tea last night.

Dave Hatton played no. 6 in that team and John Napier was no. 5 rather than Hulme.

Yes was getting confused, Paul Hallows, not Paul Marsh. Think Hallows was understudy to Ritson?

Correct. Mowbray signed at the same time as Peter Nicho and Grahame Rowe. Was getting mixed up. Was thinking of Paul Hallows not Marsh, think he was understudy to Ritson?

Yeah, he was mainly RB but he was tried for a couple of games iirc.
I remember Mowbray getting sent off for giving the Glasgow kiss to a winger at Tranmere, or could have been Shrewsbury.

Henry Mowbray. He could be a thug sometimes. I liked him.

Jimmy Armfield brough Henry Mowbray & Peter Nicholson with him from Blackpool.

Nico's career with us was remarkable. No matter who was bought to replace him he akways saw them off. He played over 300 league games for us. Not bad for someone who once said to be "I have never been the star player. I wasn't even the best player in my junior school team".

He played cricket for Astley Bridge & at a do there once, I was with my rather pretty girlfriend & Nico leant over to me & whispered "well done young man. I do hope you are doing unspeakable things to her".

Maybe we need to make a distinction between many modern day footballers who will make huge wealth over the course of their careers and the likes of John Ritson who made little more than blokes who did other jobs during their era.

The NHS doesn't provide social care - that's provided by councils. And if you've got more than about £25K in savings that are vast charges.

We're going through it with my dad. He's got a few quid in savings so it's costing us £3,000+ every month.

I was in the rafters with many other Bolton fans on the bike shed of a stand down the side. Mowbray clattered their little winger really badly, when the winger jumped up to remonstrate Henry nutted him and cleaned him out. He started walking before the ref did anything. Everybody thought that Mowbray did it so he could be banned and spend Hogmanay with his friends and family back in Scotland. 👍🙂
