Bristol Rovers (H)

Were unlucky against Brum tonight. Hit the bar twice and did a decent job, so will probably fancy their chances against us.

We just have to be a lot better than tonight’s debacle on Saturday and we’ll do ‘em.

Not trolls M we’re all mates on here pal 😊 (usually)  Think Iles sums it up quite nicely. Don’t think anybody was saying it was a vintage performance. But what I think you are missing,

This stage of the season I couldn't care less. 3 points. Onto Tuesday.

Large the same squad that narrowly missed out of the top two last season.

We know why it went tits up since, and some players will no doubt be moved on.

That isn't to say they're all brilliant- nomone has said that- but they're not all as bad as you and others seem to claim.

There is more sprint in the team now, which is a good starting point.

Is that aimed at me ? Who have I criticised ? Pointed out in agreement with you that the passing is ineffective when slow and causes problems.

I know it’s all about opinions but I thought he had a decent game today 🤷‍♂️ always trying something different and not many others did.. it was a turgid performance but a win is all that matters 👍

Thought he did ok to, seems to be on board with ss and the coaching staff. Felt like he’d upt his game a specially out possession .

When we pass it about slowly it causes us more problems than the opposition cause us in most games, the passes gradually get worse , one back pass to Baxter arrived at him knee high.

My massive irritation is the number of times a 10 yard pass is played just behind someone so there is zero momentum and we go back on ourselves.

I agree with a lot of the comments about the front two need to provide a better focal point but we also very rarely have a midfield player that breaks forward ahead of them, Legohead is the only that does it. Morley and Sheehan just not that type of player, hopefully this is something Dempsey can bring to the team

I don’t know for sure, as I’m not a football coach, but there’ll be times in a game where that passing around is necessary to try and draw the opposition out, particularly where they’re happy to sit in and take a draw (which happened at times yesterday). Tuesday may well be similar albeit Rotherham have little to play for.

Agree about Dempsey. We didn’t replace Maghoma and we’ve lacked that player who can do sprinting different. Randall was meant to be that man but was brought into the wrong squad at the wrong time.

On another note, was Schon injured yesterday or just didn’t make the bench? Sense SS doesn’t fancy him, but not sure if I’ve missed something about him being injured.

Out with a muscle injury.

Yes Schon was injured.

I agree with what you said about keeping possession, sometimes it’s necessary and purposeful, even some of the sideways and backwards stuff, as it was yesterday.

There was also some lovely long cross-field balls too yesterday.

Schon had a knock.
Passing it backwards is generally a safer pass but serves to retain possession rather than getting anywhere and I wish we could be braver with the ball sometimes. What bugs me is when we cock up simple passes through team mates not understanding each other, runs into the space not happening or good old fashioned bad technique. Heard a few boos yesterday when Matete could have gone either way way and chose the safe option.

I thought it was the best Matete has been for a while yesterday - granted it was only a little cameo. Some really good forward passes and seemed just generally more ‘with it’.

He’s a bit of an enigma, he has looked really good at times but really dropped off in the last 2-3 months. I suspect he won’t be here next season regardless but I’ve not written off any further contribution to this season just yet.

I have no problem with the ball going along the back line, but as with anything doing something well and doing something badly gives different results.

When are at our best the ball goes from one side of the pitch to the other in 2 or 3 passes quickly and creates space ( the ball moves faster than a player). When are at our worst each player takes extra touches and passes do not give the next player a chance to be positive. This frustrates forwards who start to come deep to get the ball and much easier for the opposition to close us down.

Do not get me started on our throw ins yesterday😤🤬

The same squad who failed to do what was expected of them last season. We then spent millions to make sure we went up automatically and we're going to be 15-20 points off it.

It's blatantly obvious that this group isn't good enough. Stranger things have happened in the playoffs, but assuming we don't go up anyone who thinks we should be running it back with most of them is kidding themselves. Standards need to be higher than lauding players who produce every 3-5 games and Tutu is definitely one of those.

We definitely have some quality players, but the collective squad is unbalanced so it makes some of our better players look worse than they are. Sheehan for example would look far better if he had some pacy options on the wings. Collins or McAtee would have more space if they were playing off an out and out striker.

Whatever happens this season there'll be a reasonable clear out this summer I imagine so that we can add the 5/6 more physical players we need.

Got to be honest and say was amazed when JDC and Morley were replaced by GJ and Matete, but then they combined to set up the goal.

Did not realise in the ground that their guy put the ball against his own cross bar in the first half.

Why would it be?

There are several posts on the matter, with differing views.

If we're essentially agreeing, then maybe it was a response to someone else!

Anybody else see the Bristol 'Her game too' girl in the fanzone yesterday?

Yay or nay

For me it's a yay

I don't hate McAtee but he's perhaps the most frustrating footballer in recent memory

I think he tries and wants to make things happen

We saw when we play fast into the box he will score goals

We've slowed down it seems since his prolific spell

And he then finds himself at a loose end so looks for other things to do, of which he's not the best at

I've still no idea what his best position is

Think he needs a big striker to play off but then again so does Collins so he find next season he will be third choice .
