The lads a real talent so I hope we don’t try to be clever on it? What do you mean by 'clever' on it? There'll be transparent conversations between club, family, agents, etc. The club want to lock in an asset and there's no doubt he will feel a sense of 'owing' the club something. Important to remember he's a bad tackle away from having nothing and becoming a forgotten man, so he will want to get this sorted quickly. I'd be amazed if he doesn't sign a contract, on decent money, massively incentivised based on appearacnes and promotion, with a sensible release fee. And this may be the sticking point. Fans often moan when they consider we dont get fair value for players. But we're also in a spot where we need to lock an asset down. So a fee of £3 million might be what we need to agree to in order to keep the asset. I'm saying this out loud now so because when he inevitably leaves us to move higher up the food chain, plenty will moan about the fee received. We can't have it both ways. He'll play Premier League this lad - just hope we can go up this season and keep him for another year. Be amazed if he stays beyond next season regardless of where we are. Oh. We'll beat Wigan this weekend!

September 17, 2025Sep 17 if we're just talking shite, I don't mind having a pop at right back. Played there at primary school a few times.

We'll beat Wigan this weekend! I maybe didn’t phrase it properly but think you know what I was meaning. Either way I agree 100% with the rest of your post and hopefully Max will see the benefits of staying here for at least this season but I agree a release fee of £3m sounds a bargain if he continues to improve at his current rate. Hopefully if we’re promoted he’ll stay longer but again like you I think he’ll be in the PL before too long. As for Wigan, I’d me more confident with a few changes. 🙂.
September 17, 2025Sep 17 I must admit that I’m struggling to get my head around Toal at right back, on the basis that he doesn’t really give the ball away when not playing right back. Far far easier for CB’s to move the ball as they have more passing options and don’t really get pressed any more. He’d also not be able to get ACD into 1v1 situations with the full back as he’s not athletic enough to keep overlapping time and time again. Edited September 17, 2025Sep 17 by boltonboris

But I can't see Toal being comfortable there, he's not mobile enough. So it's not a daft shout, but probably not a good one. Ideal would be Christie fit to play right back as Cogley isn't playing well. But until Christie is fit Cogley has the position.

You have put the only viable account of why my thought of Toal at rightback may not work No i am just picking Cogley as a whipping boy....No just talking shite or i once played right back when i was nine shite. You are correct in saying he wont link up as good as Cogley does on the overlap.....Fair shout to you

September 17, 2025Sep 17 See ADHD Ways is back...This time last season they were all happy to see Charles and Collins play alternate weeks. Told em that would never work. All happy that we never had a keeper on the bench.....Again told no need for it Said the 5 at the back was a system that had been worked out and we had run out of ideas......Told the manager knew better and what standard of football i had played.........It is a Forum yes i have some rank bad ideas but that is all they are thoughts and ideas........Embrace change and do not settle to see the same thing week in week out if it is not working Toal at right back may not be the solution but not changing Cogley, Johnson and Randall will also not work Edited September 17, 2025Sep 17 by masi 51

Pep's 433 and playing Ake out there and Pulis's 442 playing a CB out there (want to say Huth but I think he was CB while another CB played RB) weren't for major tactical attacking reasons. More it was to have aerial dominance in both boxes. I'd say in league 1 that's even more important judging by most of the limited opposition teams we see who come to hoof the ball forward. Lincoln for example.

September 17, 2025Sep 17 We play with attacking full-backs rather than wing-backs, and there is a difference
September 17, 2025Sep 17 Full backs also overlap- it's nothing new; indeed Phil Brown did it well when playing for us years ago. Any defensive wide player pushing forward potentially leaves that side exposed to the counter attack. That's the balance the management and players need to strike. As for Toal at full back; there is not a chance in hell of him going there, apart from some unforseen emergency in a game. Worse than Desmond going there.
September 17, 2025Sep 17 I'm not sure it's height and physicality we need this weekend as much as it is just having some bollocks They don't appear to me to be a big team

Not saying it is wrong or right but come 5 oclock on a Saturday it is the defence getting called out because a team has knocked it 60 yards downfield and they have again crossed the ball and scored
September 17, 2025Sep 17 I'm not convinced that Cogley to Toal would solve any of our problems. It's not like we're being ripped apart game after game. Four teams have conceded fewer goals than us, 13 have scored the same or more. Defensive solidity isn't the issue.
