Bruce has just been appointed as the new head coach of Aalborg in Denmark. I am sure I am not on my own in saying that his Bolton team was one of the best seen in recent times, even though not full of household names.

Just been appointed?

Last Wednesday, wasn't it?

Yeah it happened last week, it's his first management job since he was at Odense but he's also been doing a bit of scouting for a few clubs in between.

it wasn't as good as todds

it wasn't as good as any of sams

it wasn't as good as megsons

Yep, it always baffles me that his era is talked about so dreamily when compared with the last 8 years.

We made fantastic progress under him, and played some good football, but it was all at a lower level. Every team since he left has been better than his teams, with the possible exception of a couple of years just before we got into the Prem the last time.

thats a great compliment that his success was sustainable. Now what would constitute failure would be the teams being better before he arrived, that has never happened to him, even at Arsenal.

his team wasn't close to being one of the best in recent times - yes but without that team we would have still been amongst the Oldham's and Bury's of the world

it wasn't as good as todds - maybe not, but Todd had more money to play with than Rioch due to the two stints in the Premiership

it wasn't as good as any of sams - Results wise and status wise no, definately not, but it was more attacking football under Rioch

it wasn't as good as megsons - time will tell, but after 1/2 a season, the jury is still out even though the last four games of last season showed encouraging signs.

he did a great job but his team wasn't good enough for the top league - I never said it was in all fairness

Without Rioch we wouldn't have had the last 8 years. THE most important post war managerial appointment we ever made.

It isn't a possible exception. The teams that lost to Watford and Ipswich in the play offs were worse than the team Rioch got promoted with.

The team Allardyce won the play offs with was of similar quality to Rioch's side, but Allardyce's team was boring to watch,Rioch didn't cheat by playing negative, long ball football.

Rioch did such a good job at Bolton he got offered the Arsenal job after 3 seasons.Clubs the stature of Arsenal wouldn't consider a long ball merchant like Sam.

Still cant get my head round teams consisting of players like Okocha, Youri, Frandsen, Anelka, Diouf could win games playing long ball!! Or perhaps we just misxed our game up a little similar to 19 other teams in the league.

Indeed, we were getting beat by Bury every year. He instilled the pride and believe back into the club, players that were average under Phil Neal suddenly became top class, from mid-table Division 3 to Premier League in 3 seasons, that's up there with the best. The feel good factor around the club was amazing, there was a buzz that hasn't been experienced since. Singing Bruce Rioch's Super White Army (BRUCE!) on the Burnden Terrace was a happy time.

he improved the team/club/players/atmosphere more in his time than anyone else.

the team of brannagan, green, burke, came, stubbs, kelly, lee, mcateer, walker, mcginaly and thompson (plus various others at various times) put pride back into the club.

when we talk about recent players such as hierro being legends makes me laugh compared to some of those.

Great days indeed but somewhat hazy due, in no small part, to the FA Cup and League Cup exploits against much bigger teams.

imagine that, eh - fielding your strongest team in a cup competition! Pure nostalgia

I think you need to replace Came with Seagraves.

They were happy days indeed Carlos - but the buzz of qualifying for the UEFA, then the planning/going to places like Munich,Madrid and Marseilles has far surpassed the "feel good factor" under good old Bruce imo, but obviously Rioch played a massive part in the rise of BWFC in the last 15 years.

Did you go to the UEFA Cup games before Atletico and Madrid? The Reebok was like a fcuking morgue.

I know it was - but then it nearly always is <_< but i actually meant the buzz of the away trips an' all that, not the Stadium buzz (if that makes any sense <_< )

And Burke with Winstanley/Coleman

sorry no, i did consider jimmy p though.

Winstanley would be on the bench as cover especially as we now have 7 subs.

Rioch led us to that FA Cup win at Liverpool ... for sheer mind-blowing-dancing-round-the-kitchen-jumping-up-and-breaking a-light-bulb happiness that still eclipses anything from our Prem years

And there were endless 4-0 and 5-0 wins with cracking powerful goals

A great three years that made us all smile again
