Superb find!! Obviously I’d love my Dad to be still alive (sadly at 105 it would be wishful thinking) but it’s stuff like this that rings so many bells about stuff he told me By 1945 he’d be

Big Sam and David Cross amongst the new signings.

Yeah there were five that summer, only three played in this game: Dave Sutton, David Cross and Asa Hartford. Sam Allardyce and Derek Scott were either injured or suspended from the season before.

I remember being very excited that we'd made five new signings that summer. Unheard of in those days. Shame about that late equaliser. Shame it was another shit season including a horrific home thrashing off Bury about nine days after this.

The other thing I remember about that day was that England were playing in an Ashes test at Edgbaston. Set off for the match about 1pm with England one wicket down. Got back in the car with my Dad at 5pm for Sports Report (presented by Renton Laidlaw, christ knows how I remember that). England hadn't lost another wicket and had tonked the Aussies everywhere.

Makes it 1985. Remember a Day with England 300 something for 1 and Gower untouchable.

The segregation fencing was in for the 76/77 season, it was also in the Lever End, Notts Forest had half when it pissed down Xmas 76.

Blackburn had the left-hand "home" side of the Embankment in Jan 77, it went off on the left, next to the bar and turnstiles. I was in the Manny Road stand (Lever End side) next the director’s box (Len Fairclough, Ann Taylor MP, Bill Maynard always in). I was 10 nearly 11 and remember shouting encouragement when it went off. My dad bollocked me. 😆

When Stoke came in Oct 77 bricks where being lobbed back and forth. Prob from the debris the from works behind the rear wall.

Not a clue what happened last week mind.

Went off against Sheffield United too.

Fairly sure they happened after or during the Normid store going up.

80s

Prob early end but thats just my memory

Never realised how much of the paddock made up the away/no mans land

Nearly half of it?

That no mans land did shrink as our crowds improved.

I remember one of the Millwall lads with his external steel toe-cap boots and thinking, I think I’ll keep out of the way of those fuckers!

Aye that's the one. David Gower and Tim Robinson! The final two or three years of having the upper hand over the Aussies before it all went wrong for the best part of two decades!!

Wolves came for the last game of the 79/80 season and it was carnage on the embankment. Could be wrong but seem to remember them flooding in from behind the back of the embankment via that walkway. Would be before the no man’s land and the use of part of the Burnden paddock for away fans? Lad on our estate who was older than me was one of the ‘Warbies’ I think who stood right next to the away fans. Was cycling around the estate that night wearing Wolves hats and scarves that he’d nabbed

So I think those works on the embankment were late 79/early 80

I don't remember segregation fencing when Forest were on the Lever End. They were the smallest 'mob' that lasted on the Lever End but I do remember that they had a number of hard bastard greaser/rocker types with them. Outside afterwards, some of them got badly hurt on Manny Rd & some were chased & caught as far as Lever St.....our next game at Forest wasn't for the faint hearted with them looking for revenge.

& B/burn on the embankment, B/burn were on the Manny Rd side of the embankment but there were loads of Bolton in with them & it kicked off at half time.....same with Wolves on the embankment but Bolton got the worst of that one due to the large numbers they had.

The first game I remember when the Embankment was segregated was the Everton cup semi final but i can't remember if that was fencing or a line of police.

I can only just remember the Embankment segregation when it was just the one fence right down the middle. I've not really got proper memories of 76/7 but very clear ones of 77/8. Then from 78/9 I've got very strong memories. By then there were two fences and three sections with the middle one being used as no-man's land more often than not. Every now and again there was a following big enough to open the middle section.

I clearly recall the mass of excitable Leeds fans pouring in there about 30 mins before kick off when we played them that year. Then I recall the "limbs" (to use modern day parlance) when they took the lead in the first half.

Against expectations Bolton then ran the show in the second half and won 3-1. Bolton fans of that vintage will recall the Beirut style scenes as the away fans on the Embankment and home mob on the Burnden Paddock went to war as the game drew to a close.

I didn't start going till the 90s but as far as I was aware it was the away end down the side with that small bit being the "no mans land" i.e. segregation

was the case v liverpool in 1993

also noticeable is the lack of yellow lines in the BT that later came in that had the be kept clear

Yeah it is isnt it. Memory playing tricks.

Deffo got made all home following season. Thats why they made the bus shelter for the required seating.

Correct. I think they also put entrance gates directly from the away car park.

Maybe the Mandela effect but Im convinced me dad used to park on the Embankment car park (as it was free)  , and no matter what turnstyle you went in you just walked to where you wanted to watch the match from.

That stopped when we did the same for the Sir Nat testimonial and were turned away at the turnstyle only to have to walk back  knee deep (which was over head hieght for me) Through City fans to Manny road. TBF they just through a few sly comments when I was expecting us both to get a right hiding.

Just on the capacity topic, I'll quote myself from 6 years ago:

Quote

Aside from that, just looked at an old programme (Coventry 1978 - was that the  brown shirt one??) and in the letters page someone (from Hanover St. in Leyth) asked for the ground capacity breakdown at that point. Des McBain answers:

Capacity 42,466

Home Embankment 9,000

Away Embankment 6,000

Burnden Stand 2652

Paddock 10,534

Lever End 4,330

Manny Road Terrace South 2,750

Manny Road Terrace North 2,250

Manny Road Stand 4,556

Wing Stand (chortle) 928

Oddly, that adds up to 43,000 not 42466  - so we couldn't get our figures right even back then.
