kent_white Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 And to think that every tiny little dot on that one dark and insignificantly tiny patch of sky is a galaxy, each of which contains billions of billions of stars. Smiffs Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 13.7 billion years since the big bang. Fuck me thats a long time. If 1 second = one year then the universe is over 400 years old. Quote

kent_white Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I fucking love this shit! Have you ever read Cosmos by Carl Sagan? It's a little old now - but his explanation of the Universe is beautiful. Highly recommended......! Quote

kent_white Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) Or, that long ago? Life could have started AND ended out there since what we are looking at! I reckon it probably has started and died and started again countless times in that one image alone. Even a very conservative estimate would give hundreds of thousands of earth like planets in the Milky Way alone. That's not to say that life has developed on them, but the building blocks are likely to be there. Extrapolate that across the whole Universe and the hundreds of billions of galaxies like our own and your odds on us being the only ones out there start looking very short. The problem is finding the buggers and figuring out some way of communicating which doesn't take millions of years to relay a message! Edited September 27, 2012 by kent_white Quote

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. (Douglas Adams) No more gravy for you! Quote
