Winchester White Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 Time dilation is a serious head fuck. I read this short sci fi story called 'Radio Silence' a couple of years ago. If you drop an object in air it will accelerate to a certain speed and then gain no increase in speed once TV is reached. Β The value of g is independent from separate forces like friction. The resistance from the air puts a force on the object in the opposite direction to g and slows it down. Also have drag. Quote

kent_white Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 I listen to a YouTube show called Event Horizon. They were talking about this possible radio signal from Proxima Centauri yesterday. They're still betting on it being radio interference from earth at this stage but it's a fascinating discussion - particularly as they outline some of the strange things about the signal. I've never heard them be so credulous about something like this before. What was most interesting was their take on a potential signal from our nearest star. I assumed that this would be looked on suspiciously. Why out of all the trillions of stars would we get a signal from our nearest? Just sounds implausible statistically.Β Anyway - they explained that the SETI people always assumed that a star close by would be the most likely candidate. The reason being similar to how we communicate on earth. If you call someone on a mobile phone - you don't ring then directly because the power requirements would be ridiculously high. You bounce it off a series of relay stations. They're arguing that an alien civilisation would probably take a similar approach and therefore a signal from a star nearby should be exactly what we're expecting.Β Anyway - it'll probably still turn out to be birdpoo or someone microwaving a pot noodle on the ISS - but here's the programme if you fancy a listen. gonzo Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Quite mad how the length of signal was the same 40 years ago! Quote
