I'm not a fan of what I'm about to say because it's used unnecessarily at times. But Oldham is a proper northern club. Good to see them back in the league. Chuffed for 'em.

Been off sick all week stuck watching fucking Premier League review shows over and over to the point where I don't feel entirely sane anymore.

Anyway, 1994 today and I noticed Liverpool and especially United's away support still displaying a lot of England/Union flags. When did they stop that and get all contrary about the actual country they're from? We talking a mix of post Euro 96 and more appearances in Europe that started it?

Yeah I’d say 96 changed a lot.

Italia 90 it was all union jacks. Dublin 95 seemed a mixed bag.

96 all St. George’s.

Edit there was even a bolton Union Jack on the front page of the mirror...if you google Ireland v England 1995 the picture is on images :)

United largely stemmed from the stick that Beckham got in ‘98 (although apparently somewhat prior to that ‘stand up if you hate Man U’ was common at England games, not sure how true that is) and peaked with Ronaldo being public enemy number one after getting Rooney sent off, plus the Argentina chants when they signed Heinze. Know a few Utd fans who said they noticed that the non-England fans were in a minority during this year’s World Cup, which probably ties in with Liverpool taking on that mantle just to be different.

just to be cunts.

EFA

Looking forward to the game at Leyland today just a bit giddy hope the new signings get a run out.

I think it was when they started to win everything in the early PL era and the arm chair fans came into force because of SKY and they were on all the time, and in turn the hate turned up a notch

Think it was neville who said him and a few other utd players couldn't beleive it when turning out for England and the fans were chanting anti utd songs, can't blame them really on that point

Still, dunno why Liverpool fans do it now

Some of the stories from that and previous England games in Dublin sound proper rough. As unwelcoming a place imaginable at the time.

No sign of that Bolton Reds flag anywhere? ????

Watching that 93/94 season back yesterday it reminded me how many became United "fans" at school around that time. Giggs, Sharpe Cantona etc all at their best, and that fucking "Come On You Reds" song.

And yet at the same time Bolton were having that great cup run. Wasn't like there was nothing going on closer to home.

Still remember rocking up at uni in 95 and meeting all these lads from up and down the country who were massive Utd fans and not one of them had been anywhere near Manchester, even the Utd lads I knew in Horwich like Munich Dave from the Bridge at least went to the game

Some of these uni lads were like "why do you support bolton, they're shit", my retort always used to be along the lines of "so do you support brazil at the world cup?" and "fuck off, Munich cunt"

And they'd all gather round in the union with their utd tops trying to out shout each other when they were on tv, one used to call them all by their first names "come on ryan", "great save peter" as though he knew them so it made him the better utd fan, he was from hull

I fucking despised them cunts

Black Sunday was a very dark day indeed

Aye they hit jackpot with kids of our age during that time.

Think the flag thing started to turn when the whole country was singing stand up if you hate Man U. Even Chelsea and West Ham fans were at it.

Pretty much the whole country turned on them, which in turn made them even more of a cult. A lot like Liverpool nowadays.

Cantona, fergies antics, last minute winners, Roy Keane, Beckham 98 all turned every cunt against them. Plus they were winning everything in sight and their fans behaving like nob heads up and down the country.

Utd lad I knew used to go on about how every away following in 90s was mainly lads with fake tickets and fake cash

There were a few utd fans knocking them out tickets and twenty notea for a fiver and you'd get in no probs, and they'd all just stand up at the back

After a couple of seasons away pubs started banning them after they'd thought they took hundreds over the bar only to find out it was all fake

So yeah I guess with all that added into them going round Europe quite far into most seasons gave them this United>England thing, cult sums it up well. And that not arrogant just better flag that makes my teeth itch.

Fuck um.

As this afternoon's game does't seem to warrant its own thread, is anyone else actually going.

Who are we playing?

Girona from La Liga.

Yep.....decent opposition & hoping to see one or two of the new chaps.  No idea where the ground is though.....i don't think i've ever been into Leyland before !!!!

Thieves basically. And they call Liverpool for it!

Dmbs were renowned for jibbing all over the place

Should be played at macron this fucking Leyland!

Maybe not a lot but would of been some money going to the club

It would cost more to hold it at the Macron than leyland meaning we would make fuck all.

see I don’t think it would at all

We wouldn’t be opening the whole stadium up

New kits just released great chance to fleece parents

With one cancelled and another behind closed doors first proper game with new signings on show

I’d bet we wouldn’t make a fortune but we’d make

Wanderers (4-3-3): Alnwick; Olkowski, Beevers, Wheater, Taylor; O’Neil, Vela, Lowe; Noone, Donaldson, Wildschut.

Subs: Walker, Darby, Little, Hobbs, Buckley, Le Fondre, Ameobi, Edwards, Pritchard, Wood, Politic, Hall

Marcus Wood is an ex City DM in case anyone was wondering

No Otzumer, injured?

hip injury
