I'm not a fan of what I'm about to say because it's used unnecessarily at times. But Oldham is a proper northern club. Good to see them back in the league. Chuffed for 'em.

learnt a few days ago, clubs make no money whatsoever from the conference league, likely run at a loss after travel and hotel costs

europa league teams will only make money from the 1/4 onwards

I think that is a “glory club” view. For the smaller clubs, New Saints from Wales or Larne from Ireland, it’s a massive financial boost: sponsorship, big crowds, prize money, etc.

For the big clubs, who expect to make £1 million plus per game, yes … they probably can make more from a friendly in Malaysia! Fuck em!

Of course you would, but we’re not in the same world as Chelsea.

It feels like their equivalent of us winning the Papa John’s. Nice to win, great day out but nobody’s losing sleep if you didn’t win it. Let’s be honest, for a team that expects to be in the Champions League, it’s below them. Main thing for them was that they’d already got Champions League for next year

No arguments on that bit matey.

Take issue with 'below them'. Not when observing their fans ecstasy it isn't.

Probably easier to ask you and the plastic scouser who isn't the Conference League below then? If you could do it alphabetically it would be appreciated.

Farmers even!

European champions this season will be farmers according to some.

'Meaningless trophy'. FFS.

Wish we could win it - or even compete in it!

Its all relative.  Nobody I've spoken to or listened to treats it as a serious trophy or cares who wins it, or notices the games round by round.  Meaningless to the vast majority.

I wonder if the Nob has noticed who is playing in the Champions League final? No massives. No grief junkies. No gooners.

I'd back Barcelona to win the Champions League next season and for the next 5 seasons. In fact I intend to.

It's not farmers we need to consider. It's fuckwits.

Chomp.

Not to downplay any win, but you can only win the 3 European trophies if you drop far enough from the top places to qualify for the Conference.  (I wonder how many clubs have played in all 3?).

For a club of Chelsea's standing and recent history, they've been rewarded for failure with a fairly meaningless trophy, no Big 6 team in England or equivalent throughout Europe will be looking to emulate their "achievement".

There's more teams realistically trying trying to get in CL than there are places, so it's not so much about falling away from the top places, it's just uber competitive now

And once you're in one of the 3 leagues you might as well go for it

It was also a good opportunity for them to rotate the squad and get games and euro experience under fringe players belts

They've won everything but I'm sure every Chelsea fan, in particular those in attendance, loved winning that last night

West Ham were chuffed as fuck to win it.

As were we when the wanderers won the Sherpa Van/Papa John's trophy.

A cup’s a cup! 😂

Most prestigious trophy of all time that. Man utd can only dream of such glory.

I think the difference is nobody fans of other clubs take much notice of either the conference league or sherpa van.  Fine if you're involved, it doesn't make it relevant to the football world generally.

I was buzzing when we won the Lancashire Cup in the late 80s, I don't think the result was even printed in the papers the next day and it definitely wasn't reported on except in the BEN, that had banner headlines 😀

An irrelevant cup that's fun to win if you're in it.

Fair enough mate. A poll of your friends and acquaintances is good enough for me.

Talking about football in Buenos Aires, I saw this the other day, from a cup game last year. Mental.

Think this one is more on the idiot that pretends to manage London, rather than the FA. However, I have read allocations have been increased slightly for Oldham and Southend.

I read a piece from UEFA on that, Larne made £4.8m out of their little run, The New Saints £5.7m and Shamrock Rovers £7.4m. Game changing sums for them I'd imagine

Ha ha!  Not quite, but no problem, we've got a different take on the conference cup, that's allowed 👍

Certainly is pal and full marks for having a sense of humour unlike some I could mention.

Just caught a clip on BBC Breakfast of the Oldham goal against us in the quarter final in 1994. Not a happy memory but a rare glimpse of Burnden.

Prompted me to search for it.

Forgot they came down same season and we played them as equals a few months later.

Think we got beat 3-1 away and it was going off in the chaddy end.

Always nice to note that TNS, the Welsh giant, are from Oswestry. So are English.
