Great night of football for the UK and absolutely delighted for both Scotland and Wales. Never understood the pseudo-nationalist problem - after all, English kings have ruled Scotland and Wales, the Welsh Tudor dynasty and the Scottish Stuart dynasty both ruled England and we fight as one army nation against the rest so you’d think that after all this time, folk would realise we’re one nation anyway, like it or not.

Maybe I'm just a soft old twat these days who doesn't hate people, teams or countries enough but I like to see any or all of our clubs sides go a long way in Europe and enjoy seeing as many of the home nations in Euros or World Cups as possible. They're good news stories and add interest to watching those comps for me. 

How many of us are English but have a bit of Welsh, Scottish or Irish in us or in family members that's enough for a passing interest in their fortunes.

There's then the thing of our players doing well for their respective countries. Both of those were reasons for an enjoyable night flicking between Scotland and Wales last night

I just don't get the rage to be honest. You can't force folk to join in with something and sing proudly about an institution they feel indifferently about. 

I don't really have another solution.

It's just one of those things that is too late to change really. Just got to accept that it's divisive/uninspiring and will never sound as good as some of the others. It's still better than some.

And we've got ace fans and some great tunes, so all is good.

Top post .. it was football ...the theatre of football...I jumped out of my seat for the fourth Scotland goal .

Just enjoy the football , it's a beautiful game, wherever it's played and whoever is playing

Thank you Krimzon, my point exactly and I think many on here completely misunderstood it. I don’t care what the words are either but like it or not it’s our National Anthem, has been for hundreds of years and is probably the most recognised across the world. Players picked to play for England represent our country not their clubs and as such should feel pride in wearing the shirt and show it by singing the NATIONAL anthem, whatever it is. Some may think it irrelevant but I don’t and consider it utterly disrespectful to the nation when not sung with conviction.

100% agree and with a Scottish father and Welsh mother and considering the N Irish are probably the most loyal of all UK Nations I enjoy seeing them all progress, especially when they have our players in their teams. Doesn’t mean I’d want them to beat England and I see it as a badge of respect that they dislike us so much and love to try winning against us.

Aye. It’s just so disrespectful not to sing passionately about God & a tweed wearing pheasant shooter.

I reckon any player not singing it should be banned from playing. 

And I’d have kids singing it in school every morning at 9am. Detention for anyone not singing with complete conviction.

It’s still 4 team groups. 48 teams going in to a round of 32 means a fucking dreadful group stage, though. 24 from the top two of each group, then they’re going to have a league table of third placed teams and the top 8 qualify. I guarantee Scotland will finish 9th in that table. On goal difference.
