Maybe if it was say Australia vs New Zealand it'd been on ITV4

Portugal v Chile is no more interesting than Australia v New Zealand.

I'll bet the viewing figures for that match are awful, and probably 1/10th what they would of got had Coronation Street been in its usual slot

Well I agree with the last sentence I guess, but the first one, Ronaldo and Sanchez make it a lot more interesting would have pulled in a lot of viewers, best sport in the world, 2 of the best players in the world, the tournament won't get anywere near what the WC will, but it's still football and far more entertaining than a 30 minute soap(imo) the game wasn't great but some good chances missed by both teams.

ITV hardly as any football these days, just highlights, England and a tournament every 1 or 2 years. Plenty of time for Corrie etc.

I agree, and I'm not overly fussed either way. It's just the fact that ITV is an business, and survives from it's advertising, so the fact that they gave up a prime time slot, for a nothing match, that next to nobody in the UK gives a monkeys about seems a bit odd

The problem in England is when a player gets to 18-21 they stagnate. It's not due to inferior technique. The Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese leagues give their talented kids a chance at that age, whereas in England the culture is much less forgiving. The vast majority of managers (with a few exceptions) prefer experienced players, even if they're average, and fans are not willing to show young players patience.

Also, coaching has improved at junior levels but it still hasn't caught up yet in senior football where there are still a lot of dinosaurs around.

England won't compete until we have a higher number of coaches who know what they're doing.

I don't think our technique at the moment is anywhere near that of the other big countries Spain for example are a million miles better technically and the playing style makes our kick and rush style look like something out of the 50s. Hopefully the new FA DNA project will bring us somewhere near where we need to be but it'll be 10 years before we see if it has.

Brazil, argentina, chile. Who are all in the fifa top 4. Do they put millions into youth development?

Or do they just have an actual appetite for success. Rather than thinking they are Billy big bollocks on their first pro contract?
