Qatar World Cup

Right - forgetting the bent bidding process and the conditions of the migrant workers building the stadiums - does anybody else agree that a Nov/Dec competition has the potential to be ace?

Firstly because it will take up most of the traditional Christmas bullshit season so we'll all be talking about football and not festivities. Secondly just for the novelty factor. And thirdly because we can see whether or not our well worn excuse about our players being tired stands up to scrutiny.

Qatar won't win anything but England will win the virtue signalling. The FA we will defy FIFA and Kane will sport a one love armband.

Who gives a fuck if we are on the first plane home? We'll have won no matter what the results of the football games are.

Arise Sir Gareth?

"One knee, to the Eng-ger-land, one knee..."😁

Quite looking forward to the Iran match now though.

For the first time I can remember, I am not looking forward to any of them. Wrong venue, wrong time of year, wrong focus.

I suppose that contributing further to the Welsh inferiority complex would be alright.

Maybe the reverse psychology will work and we will actually win something?  It seems that the focus though is not totally on football so most likely more of the same. Also rans.

It’s odd as we need this tournament to be a bit shit so it never happens again.
If I get to see one England tournament win then I’m not sure I want it to be this one.
Fingers crossed this is the first of many.

Fear not, my friend. We won't win this one.

Phew

I hope every country does something with their kit to piss FIFA off, whether it be a gay armband or something else.

Even more so as Bolton will still be playing through it. As much as I like an international tournament, and obviously want England to do well, it doesn’t come anywhere near to how much I want Bolton to win. Seeing as we’re still playing at the same time, I think I’ll be even less bothered about it - I’d rather us win all our matches over the period than England do well, a goal v Shrewsbury would mean more than any that England could score.

For once I'm with @bolty58on this one. The hypocrisy of FIFA on this is astonishing and only made worse that other nations around the world didn't boycott when they saw what was going on.

I only hope that the homophobic sexist pricks in group A get an absolute battering each game and fail to score a goal.

Human nature will kick in though, and I'll find it hard not to get excited when England are on.

Hopefully Ronaldo will be in tears by the end of the group stage. Probably an arrestable offence for a guy in Qatar.

All the outrage initially came to nowt. Once the bent fuckers in FIFA were flushed out, it should have changed then.

It didn't happen.

Now that it's almost here, then the likes of Lineker (and to an extent) the FA can do one. All these calls for players to "come out" during the tournament is pathetic.

The teams are now preparing to go, and it's time the media etc started to get behind the players and staff, and dropped this constant questioning of them about stuff which is beyond their control.

Folk saying they won't watch it- get a grip, it's still our country playing and they should be supported.

Yeah. Defo think its a few things for me:

midseason

weather

Qatar

watching that Italia 90 documentary and its widely acknowledged that ‘the football nation’ of Italy made that tournament.

Qatar was bought on bungs and I think no one denies it anymore.

Things is, when they had the one in Japan/Korea back in 2002 it seemed an odd choice. But there was some logic behind it in that with a combined area twice the UK and a population >3 times it was possible to hope for a legacy. And given the players that have come out of them, and the continued tv interest that no doubt bolsters PL coffers, you could argue it kind of worked.

Qatar is half the size of Wales, and the population (nationals, not fast-buck earning ex-pats or disposable immigrant labour) is about that of Cardiff. So in effect it's like a WC taking place in South Wales. Not even a combo of Max Boyce, Plaid Cymru national executive and the Eisteddfod organising committee would advocate that! And that's before all the other issues.

The next one is continent-wide and I don't see why that shouldn't continue.
