Quietly in think it suits the west that Russia is aiding asad. As we've seen in other places, once a dictator goes a power vacuum follows.

This way ISIS don't get a bigger foothold, and Russia is helping in that regard.

Trouble is the Syrian government is taking liberties and going beyond what is acceptable.

As for nato stepping in; I think know that is only if a member is attacked.

It's the United nations that decides in this case and whilst Russia is a permanent member with a veto it's disfunctional.
