Oxford probably just trumps Watford in being the most abject, soul-destroying underperformance on the biggest stage. Quote

Getting knocked out of a Cup doesn't have the same long-term effect as losing a Play-Off Final. Or maybe I've misunderstood. Edit: I'm pretty sure I have misunderstood. To be clear, if I had a magic wand and could go back and win any of those three, I'd choose the Oxford game. Edited January 30 by Cheese Quote

For a long-term lasting effect and consequence you are spot on, I’m the same as you Oxford trumps them all. I think the Villa one is an “in the moment” despair. That Holdsworth miss, losing on pens and not making the last Wembley final, after making the first, left me utterly dejected! But I was over it a lot quicker than Oxford. Still don’t think I’ve recovered! 😂 Quote
gonzo Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Villa was like breaking your leg. Oxford was like having a massive long term life debilitating illness that's taken long stints of treatment and rehabilitation to even start to functional in normal life again. Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted January 30 Posted January 30 (edited) For me Stoke was the worst. Since the day I became a Bolton fan I’ve wanted to see BWFC in the FA cup final… my lad was about 7 and I put him on my shoulders all the up Wembley Way… and we were served up with a gutless playing and management display. gonzo Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Boro is up there for me. The game just seemed to pass us by. I always had it in my mind we'd get back in and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat but it just wasn't meant to be. In the whole of our run in the sun dreamland period under Eddie and Sam that was the chance to win something. I knew it was gone probably ever as I sat watching them lift it. Only time I've cried as an adult watching the Whites. Quote

Especially a year after the Papa John's Final - which was one of the most perfect days anyone could ever ask for. Quote

Villa was way worse. We were one Holdsworth balloon away from the final. Proper missed opportunity. We were miles off against Stoke from the off Quote

Felt like it was their day all along. Same with Oxford, just didn't feel right round the pubs, up Wembley way or in ground. Quote

Only time I've cried as an adult watching the Whites. Only time I've cried was when Gethin Jones scored our 4th, because my kids were with me and I knew we'd won a Trophy. Still get choked up every time I watch the highlights. Dempsey's header chokes me up more in hindsight though, because it's such a vivid memory of me and my lad jumping around at the top of the steps about to leave the stand as he was dying for a piss. He still reminds me what I said to him now and then, and he probably will till the day I die - "Just hold it in for 1 minute, we've got a corner...." Quote

Marc505 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Fuckinell bang. Coasting down M1 reading this absolute misery porn about getting beat at Wembley then this happens! (Still Stoke for me i think, was just in that sweet spot of not being too young to care and not too old to be jaded, it felt off from the minute I woke up, but so did Oxford, it was the manner of it. Especially as we'd already seen the other semi the day before and saw what it meant to City, I thought it was ours. Some scars that day took a long time to heal) Quote
