We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

Two genuine works class players in that list.

The only area John Terry has been world class in is being an arsehole.

Beckham played for 4 of the biggest clubs in Europe. Gerrard came 2nd and 3rd in ballon d’or and Micheal Owen won it. They’d have got in any team in Europe at their peak imo

terrys honour list says different, outstanding centre half loyal to his club

I'd say Ashley Cole was the best out of those lot for England on a consistent basis. And he got booed all the time at Wembley  :D

People just forget how good the premier league was back then.

Gerrard and Lampard were so good.

Except together for England. ????

Complete travesty. It’s been covered elsewhere on here but that interview sums it all up so well where they explain what went wrong.

I often wonder are there any other famous combos that should’ve worked but never did?

McFarland & Todd

Out of interest, which 2?

I'd say Gerrard, Scholes and Owen were all world class at one point in there careers

Not sure about Owen but the rest all played key roles in winning more than one title plus champions league

I wouldn't say you need to excel in the on the international stage to be world class but they all had plenty caps and all that

Knight and ream

Sordell and ngog

Come back maximus cant cope with talk of world class England players who all to a man underachieved & won zilch at that level ....

Its a team game at the end of the day.

Owen for a short time was the best in the world imo. Obviously it didn’t last when he lost half a yard of pace.

This Ashley Cole was immense

Jo Whiley and Simon Mayo

What an utter balls up they have made of that show

The BBC, that is

Owen had the raw talent to be world class, but ultimately failed to live up to his early amazing start.

Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard, Cole, Beckham, Rooney, Ferdinand and Terry all without doubt world class at some point.

I would throw Gary Neville in that list.

What they did for NT is irrelivant, been a big problem with the whole NT set up for decaceds that runs deeped than the talent of the players involved.

Gary Neville wants throwing but not on a list

As part of my WWays Spanish correspondent duties this week the TV commentator here has been raving about Harry Maguire all match.

The careers of Harry Maguire and Tom Walker have gone different ways since Walker's deflected goal against Wigan in March 2015.

David Beckham one trick pony :D

He really wasn’t.

Definition of world class would mean players who would get into the starting teams for most international sides in the world.

Beckham ticks that box clearly.

Beyond that I think its much more debatable. Ferdinand? Not for me.

Terry? Possibly but a very English type of player. Gerrard? Again the trouble is you need a certain type of team around him. He wasn't fitting into the best Spanish 11 at the time, whatever way you look at it.

Lampard? No. Rooney? No.

Cole? Possibly at a push.

Those players weren't at the level of Modric, Messi, Ronaldo, Coutinho, Kante, Varane etc....All those players walk into any international team, no questions asked. Beckham aside the rest are a level below generally IMO.

Shearer was class in the day

Should of gone Utd he would of cleaned up on honours
