We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

I mistakenly thought this was a transfer thread, seems some would rather discuss anyone who doesn't play for us and in fact many that don't even play at all.stick somewhere mods.

Definition of world class would mean players who would get into the starting teams for most international sides in the world.

Beckham ticks that box clearly.

Beyond that I think its much more debatable. Ferdinand? Not for me.

Terry? Possibly but a very English type of player. Gerrard? Again the trouble is you need a certain type of team around him. He wasn't fitting into the best Spanish 11 at the time, whatever way you look at it.

Lampard? No. Rooney? No.

Cole? Possibly at a push.

Those players weren't at the level of Modric, Messi, Ronaldo, Coutinho, Kante, Varane etc....All those players walk into any international team, no questions asked. Beckham aside the rest are a level below generally IMO.

What a load of crap!!

So only 11 world class players at any 1 time??

You have picked possibly the greatest internation team ever, and used that as WC measurement!! ????????

No official explanation of the term world class exists.

Its allways going to be down to personal opinion.

Think our transfer talk is on hold for a while

Having another look at Jack Hobbs tomorrow it seems

Hobbs would be a brilliant signing, but for the fact he's a sicknote.

for me, it's one of the best in the world in their position for a sustained period (and not a 1 season wonder)

so Lampard definitely as I doubt there were many attacking midfielders with all round contributions similar to his when winning numerous titles, PLs and a CL in the 00s

whilst there weren't many better left backs than Ashley Cole

getting into a starting XI isn't the best barometer as teams play different styles, formations etc - though I reckon with a player with Lampards attributes would've got into plenty international teams in his prime, and would've been happy with his 1 in 3 return

Lampard would've scored bucket loads as the false 9 in that Spain side.

Cashley would have walked into any side align his prime, him being a massive bell cheese didn't stop him from being an excellent footballer

Hobbs’s Back injury must be a concern, especially with the Forest medical team saying he was unlikely to play again, he has played since, but for how long?

We need to stay away from Hobbs we cannot afford sick note players this season.

We need someone to take up residency in the Mark Davies suite?

Zidane springs to mind.

Never turned up at stoke on a February tuesday, did he

Zidane springs to mind.

yep, there'll be others too

I guess the next question is, are you picking a starting XI?

a player doesn't get relegated from being "world class" because there's another one better than him (not IMO anyway)

and Lampard had a better goal scoring record as well

though Zidane has a WC and Euro medal

(but so does Christian Karembeu)

Not necessarily 11 but not many more. If you use world class in any meaningful it’s defining the best players in the world at the time.

If you are talking about winning world cups then most meaningful is having players who are in top 2 ideally best in their position. If your players for example are 3rd/4th best chances are there is a better side than you out there.

To me world class means you walk into just about every team in the world at that time. If you don’t you might be very very good but not the best in your position.

I don’t quite agree, as you can have more than one world class player in the same position.

I would say to be world class means you are definitely in the squad.

Talking of Mark Davies, where is he, is he still on the treatment table at the Macron or another clubs treatment table.

Probably still sat in the directors box at Sheffield Wednesday with his pants round his ankles.
