I was shell shocked and the long drive back was all about ifs and buts with my four passengers. If Mark Patterson had found row Z with his clearance it could have been so different. However, Neale would probably have kept his job at the end of that season and our journey with Rioch might never have taken place. I heard a urban myth that Neale was so shell shocked he was seen sat in his car on Burden car park until first light.

As an aside I remember it being T shirt weather outside the pub near the ground.

I took a Southampton fan/ work colleague with me in the Bolton end. He couldn't believe our following for a midweek game

When we went 2-1 up with a few minutes to go it was electric only for those flapping hands for the equaliser

I think by the time our train got back it was first light!

The train announcer announced that we were 15 minutes ahead of schedule so would stand at a platform in Birmingham New Street. There was a big black guy minding his own business on the platform with a briefcase. Some of the lads a few carriages further forward than mine started giving him some stick so he put the case on his knee, took something out and walked up to the train, lobbing a CS gas canister through the window.
There were some sore eyes in that carriage!

Now that I've re-read what I wrote last night, I've suddenly realised that I'm really not sure if he lobbed the cannister into the carriage or just stood at the open window and sprayed. Either way, it was funny seeing lads running past us in tears and gagging. They brought with them the faint odour of CS gas.

Don't recall that. I know we were escorted from the station to the ground and got pelted with beer glasses from a pub we walked past...

which was full of Bolton fans.

Hard for kids to imagine these days how exciting the prospect of an FA Cup quarter final was back then, enough to take 3,500 down to the South Coast on a Wednesday.

Julian Darby's "last minute winner" was up there for excitement with Robbie Savage's goal at Wrexham and the moment it hit the net has probably only been surpassed with Fab's goal at Wembley.

We lost as expected but that night provided one of life's great moments

said it before, i walked through my front door at 5.20

was in work at 6

that day dragged

Our minibus broke down on the way back. I got back in my house at about 07:00 being the last to be dropped off by the recovery vehicle, I was changed and back out at 07:45 for my mates mum to give us a lift to work.

As Cassie says, the day dragged somewhat

That train took about 6 hours it was horrendous journey. The police escort from the station and size and the length of that escort was a sight for sore eyes.
