To be honest (unlike politicians) they both piss in the same pot 

Can see oaps being hit again and also will MPs get any sort of reduction in expenses I very much doubt it

I don't disagree at all. We'll just have to see what happens in the budget. 

Oaps have had a decent run these last few years

Its time richer pensioners helped out

I do think theres some borderline cases but its always been the same

Just like its nearly always the folk in the middle get hit

Its time for a big rethink on tax

 

Cant find it now but im sure i read sunak was paying low 20s on his 'income' whereas Starmer is in the 40s, despite Sunaks earnings being much higher and this was nowt to do with his mrs

Changing the winter heating allowance is 100% the right thing to do.

How they have changed the allowance is not the right way to do it. 
 

A mate of mine just started worked as a volunteer at Citizens Advice type place, reckons 50% of people he sees are older folk who are basically well off but trying to put assets in their husband/wives name so they can claim some type of benefits. They amazed most stuff is assessed at household rather than individual level. 

I wonder how long the public will tolerate the "things are shit because the Tories shafted the public finances" line

Well they have 5 years.  So in many ways in terms of the economy they do not have to do much in next 18 months. As long as things seem under control and then show improvement as we get near election.

Interesting that Starmer also talked about societal issues and think they need some focus. I am not sure how the energy companies making such massive profits that people understand why prices are going to go up at the same time as the winter allowance being cut in such a basic way. 
 

Although if the economy gets turned round sure a lot of the society issues become less loud.

They might have a full parliament ahead but I'm getting the sense people aren't going to tolerate being told we're going to have to fasten our belts because the Torie have left them a mess to sort for very long

Older folk often talk with glazed expressions about how great they were at dealing with tough times, and scraping ice off windows, well maybe nows their chance to get back to those halcyon days by shouldering some of the burden.

So what are people who are not going to tolerate it do ? The whole idea of a 5 year parliament is to give parties time to make improvements. 
 

Pretty sure they will get hammered in council elections but the lack of a coherent opposition will help. If by time of next election they can not show improvements they will deserve to be challenged but for now everytime a Tory opens their mouths it reminds people how bad they were.

You've possibly seen this as many times as I have. Same old cycle. "Trust us brothers. No new taxes for the working classes. We'll smash the rich, nationalise this that and the other and life will be peachy". They will probably be out next time around dependent on how badly the centre right vote might be split. I predicted they would be heavily on the nose by Q1 next year. It might not take that long.

As I say they will be judged on their record over 4/5 years. If they have not improved things or have things heading in right direction they will get beat. Not sure they are real socialists however, think there are plenty on the left who would argue the current lot are mini Tories. 
The most socialist things they are talking about is taking failing industries back into state control, which on the face of it is pretty in line, however when the alternative is rivers full of shit and a failing rail network it is a lot less radical.

My mum and dad are not wealthy by any means,both worked all their life's and even managed to put a little away but they are worried with the fuel payment cuts, cost of living and what other cuts labour are going to do is seriously going to effect them living out their retirement in any sort of comfort.They paid into the system all their working lives and now to be seemingly targeted by Labour is just wrong

I think that politics is fractured to the point now where no leader or party would be ‘tolerated’ by 30% of the electorate from day one.

It’s a totally different scenario now where two extremes are unhappy with everything and dominate a lot of discourse but don’t have the numbers to actually win elections.

It’s possible one extreme builds the numbers but I’d say unlikely. So I’d get used to this. Labour or Conservatives in power and a lot of noise. I don’t think there is any chance of the country uniting behind any leader or party.

The fact Labour and Starmer seem prepared to just ignore the noise I think is to their credit in the end. Their chance of re-election is entirely dependent on fixing the NHS (or starting to), doing something to reduce the boats and turning the economy round. If they do those things or in part do them there will still be the same disquiet but they will I think be fine.
