Ah the cycle where the tories fuck everything up, divide society and make everyone skint bar the elite then Labour come in, sort everything out but then run out of cash so the tories come back in and make everyone skint again? :)

I just remember everyone rioting in the late 80s, being cold and skint during the early 90s then all of sudden things are great after 97 and hospital and schools being done up all over the gaff then we end up cold skint and rioting again :)

Agree about loads more options

Yes it's not Starmers fault the country is on its knees but it's up to him who gets hit the hardest

I'm glad to hear that mate. I think the problem with the economy is that it's SO bad that nobody is going to be paid extra to afford a little treat. Those days are long gone. I can see how that would be hard to take if they've been putting into the system their entire lives mind.

It isn't his fault, but at the same time, he and his party voted for all the lockdowns/furlow schemes that were put in place.

Schemes that at times they wanted to extend.

The schemes cost money, and no matter who was in government, essentially the same outcome would have arisen.

That money has to be clawed back, and countries all over will be doing so for years.

Aye. And we don’t know where he’s going yet. Wait until the budget.

I imagine all the people he mentioned are likely to get hit. And much harder than pensioners have.

and i know its banging the same drum, but you don't pay in for yourself tomorrow, you pay in for others today

so, your folks issue is theres not enough being paid in NOW to give them a good pension

Everyone will take a hit. It has to be that way unfortunately in order to get the country going in the right direction and public services on their feet again. It’s not going to be pleasant and may take a few years before we all see the benefit.

You really do have a weird view of pensions and pensioners. It’s a continuous conveyor belt of payments into the system that gives us all a reasonable pension at the end of our lives. It’s one of the worst in Europe by the way but never mind. When I started paying tax and NI over 50 years ago, it never occurred to me that I was subsidising my grand parents or parents as the years went by.
State pensions are paid on the basis of your NI contributions. If you don’t have the required contributions, you can apply for pension credit. You then get the winter fuel allowance. The less you pay in the more you get out. It stinks.

If it was as you describe they wouldn’t keep having to increase the pension age. I suspect a generation or two behind will in practice never get to retire on a state pension.

@Casino is right, though

The pension pot of today's pensioners is paid by today's working age population

Absolute rubbish. Have a look around Europe, in fact the world and see how they do it.

Yes. My dad paid for my grandfather. I paid for my dad, my sons pay for mine, their sons (or daughters) will pay for theirs.
Have you and others only just twigged how it works?

So why are we reducing National Insurance contributions?

Sunak was wanting to get rid altogether, Johnson seemed to get it and increased  to put towards the care sector

Our pensions are a disgrace amongst the worst in Europe.. pensioners having to survive on less than minimum wage for a G6 country it’s embarrassing.

No

The fact is we are a fat and lazy, over aspirational, low productivity economy with virtually zero growth.

There is no money and  there is an "Elephant in the Room"

Yep. I’ll beat my drum now. Look at the French system. The final state pension is based on income similar to a private pension. Surely a fairer way than our current scheme. They also retire earlier than us. If only we had a government (of any colour or leaning) who could implement a similar scheme.
