I think most of the people you are talking about have been lying in wait anyway, just waiting for an angle to attack, and didn't vote for them anyway

To be fair, I don't mean that or any other one demographic

It's just the sense I'm picking up from people generally

Well in 5 years they’ll get another go at it. As diver used to tell me, it’ll fly by

...and you hold out hope for this under socialists?

Who is David Lammy giving money to in foreign aid these days? A good litmus test for how this lot will fuck you over.

Who did the last lot give it to?

So all those that blamed everything else bar the government for the big pile of shit we are in are now blaming the government for the big pile of shit we are in?

Is it not Ukraine, Covid and the world's problem now? All down to Labour now?

What happened to the stiff upper lip, Rule Britania and we just have to accept things and crack on?

Fuck all to do with it. This lot send to those who would harm us. How eminently sensible :rolleyes2:

No. There is a cycle I have witnessed over and over again through my lifetime. The first few 'tentative' steps are precisely the same again.

Let's just wait and see. You'll be howling for their heads come February. Others will be keeping their heads down.

Is this the cycle that has been endlessly disproved on here over and over? It's almost as though Bolty has blocked lots of posters.

Ah the cycle where the tories fuck everything up, divide society and make everyone skint bar the elite then Labour come in, sort everything out but then run out of cash so the tories come back in and make everyone skint again? :)

So you are picking up from people generally that they will not be happy but won't do anything about it ?

So they have 5 years to improve things. The last lot could not even agree if they had cancelled a contract to use helicopters everywhere or not. The biggest challenge they will hopefully have in 5 years is people remembering how incompetent and corrupt the last lot were. Let's see how much PPE costs they go after.

I'm not sure what it is you're expecting people to do

My point was simply that I get the sense people might become really quite disillusioned with Starmer and his cabinet pretty soon

These poor pensioners, eh?

83p per day is the heating bonus.

Scrap the triple lock and they can have the 83p back.

Cmon Spider that's a crock of shit and you know it.Pensioners have already been hit and they will get hit again.

My mum and dad are not wealthy by any means, both worked all their life's and even managed to put a little away but they are worried with the fuel payment cuts, cost of living and what other cuts labour are going to do is seriously going to effect them living out their retirement in any sort of comfort. They paid into the system all their working lives and now to be seemingly targeted by Labour is just wrong

Do you think there's a danger that they won't be able to afford to put the heating on this winter? Or that they might need to do without other essentials to put it on?

Meanwhile - while we're here moaning, Kier Starmer is in Berlin working on a new treaty with Germany which includes a partnership designed to reduce illegal immigration by targeting people smuggling gangs, improve trade and cooperation on defence.

And my point is that people being pissed off 2-3 months into a term is totally irrelevant. No one is voting in the next GE based on how they feel now . It is good politics to get the bad stuff out of the way early and put in the foundations to improve things as we move forward.

My MIL has a tiny private pension that means she does not qualify , under the previous rules she was saving money. Ironically pushed her over threshold so she now has to pay her full rent. The change will affect her but probably off set by her savings reducing (under £15k I think).

But she lives in a one bedroom reasonably modern flat which is easy to heat. Anyone living in an older slightly bigger house won't be in the same position.

As discussed on here the issue with the means testing of the heating allowance is people on the cusp , who just miss out. People who just qualified for Pension Credits are now better off than those who just fell under the threshold. Martin Lewis is running a campaign to increase take up of pension credits as you now win twice if you qualify. The fact the announcement was followed closely by the latest increases in fuel prices despite the energy companies making massive profits really does not fit with the government for the people message.

They probably can afford the essentials but after paying in to the system all their lives nobody can tell me they don't deserve to treat themselves once in a while (eg having a couple of days away)which they would have to cut back on which to me is not right

Then I'm not sure what they expected to happen so soon

Assuming we're talking about folk who voted for them

These folk must've had some inclination of the mess the Tories made if they voted labour in to sort it out

If so if should be clear it's going to take time, all I see is a government getting on with it, not sure what illusion these people were under when voting

If we're not talking about labour voters, see my previous reply

Just shows we never needed to be in the EU to get deals!

Still not sure how these gangs are going to be tackled though.

British police have no authority outside this country, and can only share data etc- something that is already going on.

Whether the NCA etc can have greater ties with counterparts, interpol etc, who knows. Hopefully they can, but it also has to involve improving our own security measures.

Today's comments- renaming boat migrants, and changing their status, is surely going to make those using the gangs even more enthusiastic to do so.

Therein is the hidden reality.

Labour's vote share increased by a little over 1%.

Turn out was down quite a bit.

The election yielded the result, based on our first past the post system- something that, on balance, I still think is the best way- which gives the incoming party the best opportunity of getting things done their way.

In terms of total numbers, it's probable that fewer voted for them than at the last election.

But if folk are unhappy about it, then they should have got off their arses and voted.

That's how our electoral system works.

No point crying over spilt milk.

I turn pension age in October and retire fully next June, just so glad I have a couple of half decent pensions in place
