Just read this little piece of research from the centre for towns institute in the FT. Thought people might like to read it - Gonzo it uses Blackpool as a test study.

It’s about the issue we have in Britain around the exodus from towns such as Blackpool of younger people and the huge divide this has created between cities and university towns and towns across the country. It then goes on to show that these ‘left behind’ places were most likely to vote leave and this division between haves and have nots widens. It’s probaly better to tackle this ‘internal immigration’ rather than worry about our boarders, to ensure there is equal balance across the UK, but that’s just my humble opinion.

I read the article on Saturday and found it contain quite a bit of needles spin and bias to basically say the town is full of poverty because everyone is skint. No real need to show a picture of damaged carousel or graffiti on a wall.

It does highlight some very good points, but to use Blackpool as a generic example of left to rot seaside town is a misinformed, mainly because of the sheer amount of cash the town generates through tourism. The golden mile is booming during the season and doesn't do bad out of it, there's a hell of a lot money to be made in Blackpool, that's why hordes of unskilled workers head here. The inhabitants on the periphery just choose not to get involved, hence the poverty stricken areas that article cites.

Yes the towns fucked, but the amount of revenue it generates suggests that it shouldn't be. Part and parcel of having of a towns industry being a tourist one I suppose. Everybody is on the take and nothing goes back in.

interesting that gonzo

i once had a look at teams that had left the football league over the years and i'm sure the majority were coastal towns....or at least, remote

is that cos people have deserted these towns and with them, the money?

like you say, blackpool is probably different, but can see them going, too

maybe for different reasons

Blackpool FC will go bump, that I'm certain, unless they get extremely lucky.

Like you allude to, people make their money in these towns and take it with them. All the big business in Blackpool is privately owned. The poverty stricken areas won't see a penny of the cash generated by the new Hilton hotel on south prom or fancy new ride at the pleasure beach.

(...any money the council make they decide to reinvest in stupid schemes like putting tram tracks up Talbot road instead regenerating the shit bits.

But that's another story :) )

Suppose andy pilley breaks the mould with all this. If every town like Blackpool, southport and the likes had one of him the towns and their football teams would be better off.

Like I said from day one we will have to offer an olive branch to make it look like we’ve been punished, but really we could just walk away pay our liabilities and do just fine, however we’re playing the good neighbour trying not to embarrass our neighbours and partners. It’s happening as predicted deal will be done we will move on retain access and the smoke will go up the chimney just the same. Let’s hope remainers can now unfurl their fingers from the cliff edge and will find it’s just a 12 inch drop to the floor.

Theresa hasn't a clue what she is doing and the last thing she will be worrying about is 'not embarrassing our neighbours'

I concluded she was an idiot the day she accepted the PM job.

Brexit means Brexit also sounds rather stupid now, as it did then.

Except it won’t apply and 40 billion for full access and regaining our sovereignty in time it could be seen as bargain of the century.

I'm not sure coughing up £40,000,000,000.00 can ever be seen as a bargain.

At least we appear to be moving forward now, and hopefully we can soon get to a figure acceptable to the EU.....as I'm sure we'll still need to "up" that offer.

At least folk have stopped suggesting we should tell them to fuck off, and give them nothing

£40 billion to get our sovereignty back and who do we give it to? M bloody P's who when they aren't fiddling expenses are fiddling young research assistants.

I'm sure the vulnerable people who's services will have to be cut in order to pay for this 'bargain of the century' will be over the moon.

This is nothing other than a complete and utter dog's breakfast.

The £40bn is how much we are offering so talks can start for us to negotiate the trade deals we already have.

I am not sure when we actually get control back but it better be worth it.

We do not have to pay the 40 billion if we cannot agree a deal.

We do not have to pay the 40 billion if we cannot agree a deal.

Maybe.....but let's not take it for granted that £40B is going to be enough to get the talks going, I suspect that the EU will push us further still - by the time negotiaitons have finished, I reckon we'll be closer to £100B than we will be to £40B........hope that I'm wrong, but already some in the EU have come out and said it's not enough yet.

As it stands, you think paying £40B would be a bargain, at what point, cash wise, do you reckon it ceases to be a bargain and goes into them milking us senseless

As a slight aside, the chaos in Germany at the minute (politically speaking) is that good or bad for our negotiations?  - I'd imagine it's not great, but I don't really know

I would think it would help us Merckel is seriously weakened not unlike May, regarding your previous comments of 100 billion there is only so much the British public will stand and the EU cannot afford to see the UK walk without paying any money into the EU coffers, any more than 40 billion and I am in favour of just that course of action.

If we don't pay and walk away without any trade deals the country will plunge into recession before the cars started.

May not seriously weakened, may be you should ask the Irish , who seem a bit pissed of about a hard boarder, and these are the people who's votes she brought to stay in power

If people had realised there would be a £40bn bill to leave do you think it would have affected the vote ?

If we don't pay and walk away without any trade deals

This cant and won't happen, for all the MPs saying they would walk away they simply won't. We'll pay whatever is required to keep the same kind of deal that we currently have. If that ends up being £100B, we will still do it, having no deal really isn't much of an option, as it would cost the country far more than £100B

Absolutely it would have affected the vote and I’m a staunch leaver.

To be honest, when we start talking about such large numbers, I'm not sure the British public (in the main) really care or understand, as the numbers are just so massive. Take into account the apathy now towards us staying or going, with it taking so long, I don't think even if we offered up the full £100B, that people would really be arsed either way....especially as it would be over a fairly lengthy period of time (I would have thought)

Can you quantify your 100bn cost in the example of a no deal? Just interested as seeing alsorts banded about with no real explanation
