That might be right, but obviously now that we're in, it's going to be deeply unpleasant for us whilst we extract ourselves (if we ever actually do of course)

we are coming out

if we weren’t the moment for that revelation or backtrack would’ve come before now

I reckon you're right - but I'd also not put it past the Government, once they've struck the final deal, and all the facts are laid bare for all to see, to then ask the public if they want to go ahead with it............

Even As a staunch leaver I think that should be how it is done as I’ve said earlier.

I don’t think it will however I think it’s done now but who knows.

And for the record I would still vote to leave.

Divorce bill as Its so elequently named didn’t come as a surprise. It was always known to be there just unquantified.

The biggest mistake was joining in the first place. Despite denials it was always clear that the long-term desire was a single state.

Most over 60's were voting to reverse a referendum result from over 40 years ago. Menkul!

Agreed, it would be the right thing to do...............in fact it might have been nice if both sides had made a bit more of an effort at the front end and advised what leaving would actually involve, instead of both spouting bullshit and lies  -  I don't even really blame the leave side on this, it was the remain side who fucked it up, as they thought it was a given that we would vote to remain

Agreed both sides are fucking useless. We are where we are though and can’t see it being changed now

To be fair we shouldn’t have been surprised the genea election was such a fucking shambles after the eh referendum really.

Interesting developments today with the DUP getting upset about the border and not happy with the rumours of Irish/Northern Ireland border being different controls to other UK borders. I am sure that it will get sorted and its becoming quite clear the EU now are wanting to go forward and move onwards which is good news I think its promising that there seems to be a positive will from the EU to get this all sorted out, and as predicted all will be resolved in the fullness of time.

These are the very initial talks, the easiest things to sort. And what we're doing is bending over and giving into the EU demands it seems as otherwise political pressure back home would be too much. Even then we've not got it over the line.

None of this is good.

if it is different and Northern Ireland do in effect "remain" in the EU as far as trade is concerned, then the Scotchers will no doubt want a piece of that......followed by the Welshists.....and then no doubt the London based Financial Sector. It's ridiculous.

May really doesn't want to be pissing off the DUP, and they certainly don't want any deal that looks like putting a hard border in the Irish Sea, and pushing them closer to Ireland

I agree, this is just the precursor for us to even get to the negotiation table, then the real tough negotiation starts. If we have acquiesced on every EU demand so far then you can expect the same on the trade discussions and this won't be pretty for us at the end.

The union will last two minutes if any of this in on the table.

the DUP will not agree to any deal that even appears to make NI anyway different to the rest of the UK, even though they dont want a border themselves

edit to clarify border as in physical "hard border", they obviously see a border between NI and ROI

Do we hold all the cards then or not?

I only thought this would take a couple of weeks then the EU would bow down to our demands

Has anything at all actually happened yet?

Anything?

DUP getting involved and threatening to withdraw support unless they are satisfied with the border / Irish situation (which is understandable from their perspective).

Theresa is now in a pickle as a result of her disastrous election decision / performance.

Yes

We’ve told the EU, we are Britain, invented everything ever, once had a commonwealth and owned half the world

They’ve told us to fuck off

DUP would always have had this issue at the forefront of their minds and I’m sure that when they offered the deal to the tories it was always in both parties minds that this would be a dealbreaker for the DUP

Thus I would say that Theresa is in no more of a pickle now than before this issue became tomorrow chip wrappers

That’s true, but it’s more of an issue since the general election and the fact TM relies on the DUP due to the poor showing.

Not sure if the Tories would have pushed through with a sea border had they not needed their support in any case, but their concerns wouldn’t have been as high up on the list if they didn’t rely on them

Absolutely agree it wouldn’t have really been a major area of focus for the tories bit as soon as they gained support of the DUP it would have been a part of those initial discusssions.

As such I can’t see what the new news is here and why folk are making out the DUP are suddenly playing hard ball over it now

If that was aimed at my post, you must have misread mine (or inferred something I didn't say). I haven't suggested this is a "new" stance from the DUP. The point I made (which fatolive has also reiterated) is that this issue is directly as a result of her election flop.

Shambles.

Not at all aimed at you.

Just a generalised statement

The issue was there before this years election. It was there at the point of the referendum.

If the Tories had won every single seat in England, the issue would still be there. How can NI stay in, when Scotland, Wales, London, Manchester etc can't. It would break the Union. Likewise If Labour had won every seat. Or we had a rainbow coalition.

The DUP may be the focus of the issue, but its ikely to be the issue that forces a hard Brexit. Ironically, the biggest losers of that might ultimately be Eire.

If and when RoI realise that they can solve the problem at a stroke.
