I dont buy all this "not ready for the 1st Team" line to be honest with you. says who? not everyone, the opinion of one or two people at that time. sadly its normally the manager & coaches of the 1st team.

how do they get ready for 1st team football in the championship? U23's isnt going to give them that experience, neither is being kicked from pillar to post in the northern conference or league 2.

the further up the football ladder you go the better standard of football it is. So if we have decent players in the U23's then they will hold their own in the first team squad. Yes they may make mistakes but that comes with the territory. Jesus the majority of our 1st team squad have made mistakes throughout the season. most important thing is they learn from it

Trent Alexander Arnold as an example. he had a couple of torrid games during the season but look, went away learnt from it and come back better for it. Now going to the WC. im not saying we have players of that quality but the principle is the same.

The last few years there hasnt been a clear pathway in to our 1st team squad. for whatever reason. Personally i think its because they are deemed as not having the attributes to play our 1st team way. the U23's play in a completely different manner to the first team. Thats not a criticism, just a fact.

That doesnt mean theyre not ready for 1st Team football, just not right for ours. So either pack it up or you get all teams at all levels playing the same way

You don't get kicked from pillar to post in League Two any more than you would in League One or the Championship. HTH.

ok then, get less room to play better football.

Another year has passed and not one academy player near the first team.

Not even close. None starting. None coming on as subs. No one on the bench. (Excluding vela who was in the academy about 8 years ago)

And that’s for a club who can’t afford to pay for anyone.

The return on investment is atrocious. For any other type of business this kind of overhead would have been shut down years ago.

And with no one anywhere near the first team it isn’t going to get better anytime soon.

There is no rob holding sale this summer and no potential next year.

Clough and Holding sold last year

To be pedantic Clough played this year and came through academy. Not sure the ‘another year’ is fair when we have sold 2 academies in last 2 seasons for £5m plus.

In the case of Hall, "who says" was Jimmy Phillips and David Lee

Not saying they are necessarily right, but between them and PP I'd say they're the best eyes we have

I get its difficult, sadly for Hall strikers have no where to hide, if he came in and couldnt hit a barn door for half a dozen games everyone would be on his case saying he was shit. Same with Samizadeh a couple of years ago. Now hes struggling to get in Kilmarnock reserves im led to believe?

sometimes brave decisions and gambles have to be taken, youre only gonna know if theyre ready when given the opportunity. Look at Rashford..

Sure midfielders like King & Politic couldnt do any worse than Derik?

Has it occurred to you that the majority of young players in U23/U18 and academies never see the light of day? Even from really successful youth teams. The reason being that most ultimately aren't good enough.

U23 teams would be beaten by a not of non-league teams. In fact didn't Chorley run our kids close or beat them in the summer? When you watch young players up against league 2 or whatever they're often not even at that standard/ The odd one is and shines and stands out.

But the group who've just won the U23 league were all judged by the various youth team coaches to not being good enough to play in the first team.

All the players who've bagged loads in our reserves who the fans "screamed to play" have gone elsewhere and disappeared at low levels. The truth is that U23 football is levels and levels below even league 1. Let alone the championship. The majority is most aren't and never will be good enough.

The chorley team battered one of our academy teams couple of years back think it was 5/6-0  Samizadeh played and Will Jaaskalinen in the net, most youth teams your lucky if 1 gem comes through we have had Holden and Clough who have virtually saved the club and Vela doing O.K. in the first team, that kind of return means its well worth having an academy.

Yep get all that.

its us who have invested this time and effort in to these players though for them to then go out on loan elsewhere fail then get released. as someone said above the return on investment overall in shocking Because i bet big money not much of the money generated for the sales of Clough & Holding went back in to the academy. Yes it helped the club but the academy isnt there to balance the books its there in the first instance to improve the team

However, you introduce 2 or 3 in to the squad, 15- 20 minutes here, cup game there. majority will probably sink. But maybe just maybe one will swim.. then its all worth while

The coaches are good enough judges to know who are good enough.

Its clear that none were good enough or ready. If any stood out as being good enough or ready they'd have got the chance.

Lots of clubs have abandoned their academies for that reason.

You aren't having it, inspite of the aforementioned statistics that suggest very few are good enough to break through across the board?

As above if you've ever watched the kids in pre-season up against non league sides you see immediately how big the gap is. And why they aren't anywhere near the first team.

The hope is they develop, and go somewhere on loan for experience and come back here more ready to step up. But its a numbers game. 1 in every 50 might step up eventually. If 1 in every 100 makes a step up and a decent fee you might break even.

What am i not having?

in fact i honestly honestly cannot be arsed with this daily routine of me saying i think black is black and you responding with you think its fucking slate grey.

I'll crack on with my view on football and you crack on with your methodical, dull and completely miserable view. Because your sending me to an early grave pal

what has it cost us to run the academy for the last 5 or 6 years

im thinking you must know to decide its worth keeping

You weren't having that the kids who get thumped by non-league sides aren't good enough to play first team football.....and that David Lee, Jimmy Phillips and Parky must all be wrong. Add that those who bother to watch them regularly and all say none are up to standard yet for the first team.

You can have a view, but it doesn't seem to be based on very much evidence.

I’d be interested to know

Is it split out in the accounts? Would assume it is

How about getting rid of the academy, sell the land at Lostock for houses and sign Samir Nasri with the proceeds

The sales of holding and clough has come absolutely no where near to the cost of running the place, the weekly wages of coaches and the weekly wages of all the players employed on youth contracts. Certainly not over the last 10 years

End of day we just don’t know

We don’t know how much the academy costs Phillips lee etc

Same time all it takes is a young lad to break through and make the grade and with clubs paying silly money these days we could benefit

not said anything of the sort.

we are hardly awash with talent in the first team squad at the moment & taking in to consideration the recent success the development team had against clubs at the same level as our first team i would say overall it is the best we have had for a while.

nowhere have i said all of them should be given an opportunity. nowhere have i said they will all be good enough, nowhere have i said they wont fail.

what i have said is, rather than getting these lads up to a certain point then letting them go or moving them on there must be somewhere, a lad or a few lads who could be given the opportunity to Train with the first team, or introduce them in to pre season and drip feed them 1st team football and that experience. Yes the decision would be a brave one. But thats what football is about at times.

If it comes to light they are not ready or never will meet the standards expected then they get moved on, But you cant tell someone they will never do something if they dont get the opportunity to show you!

if we all lived in this mundane, must work to a process, never take risks, pragmatic approach some managers use which seems to rev your engine we'd all be fucking accountants. But this is football. theres always an element of calculated risk.

and if all else fails, fuck it off.

end of

Baz, leave the mongloid to it. He's happy taking the opposing view and generally being an irritating cunt.

so fuck em off then? whats the point in having them...

I thought it was a requirement of the EFL that all its members have a youth academy and development team.

I think it is as simple as that.

As for the quality of the players they produce, the old saying that 'if you are good enough you are old enough' is true, whichever level of professional football you are playing at.

Do people honestly think managers such as Parkinson conspire to hold good young players back from their academies in order to play older inferior players instead?

Christ Parkinson has played a 20 year old in 34 games for us this season (30 league, 1 FA Cup, 3 EFL Cup) - Antonee Robinson, yet has obviously thought that (20 year old) Connor Hall and others youngsters not good enough for our current first team yet.

Again it is as simple as that.

yes there may be a requirement to have one, but we as a club spend a lot of time and money making it the best it can be. at the moment for very little reward.

We could easily run it on a budget for a box ticking exercise for the EFL & not really give a toss about it, but are choosing not to. thats great. However at some point you have to justify that.

if players were introduced then found out not to be good enough then that could be justified in my eyes. However never giving anyone the opportunity is a different matter.

even if Hall had made the bench last season at least it wouldve sent a message that we promote where we can. We have done it in the past with Clough, Holding, Walker, Eaves. 50% worked the other half didnt. But at least we gave them the platform to show us
