barrycowdrill Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 (edited) I thought it was a requirement of the EFL that all its members have a youth academy and development team. I think it is as simple as that. As for the quality of the players they produce, the old saying that 'if you are good enough you are old enough' is true, whichever level of professional football you are playing at. Do people honestly think managers such as Parkinson conspire to hold good young players back from their academies in order to play older inferior players instead? Christ Parkinson has played a 20 year old in 34 games for us this season (30 league, 1 FA Cup, 3 EFL Cup) - Antonee Robinson, yet hasn't thought (20 year old) Connor Hall and others youngsters good enough yet. Again it is as simple as that. yes there may be a requirement to have one, but we as a club spend a lot of time and money making it the best it can be. at the moment for very little reward. We could easily run it on a budget for a box ticking exercise for the EFL & not really give a toss about it, but are choosing not to. thats great. However at some point you have to justify that. if players were introduced then found out not to be good enough then that could be justified in my eyes. However never giving anyone the opportunity is a different matter. even if Hall had made the bench last season at least it wouldve sent a message that we promote where we can. We have done it in the past with Clough, Holding, Walker, Eaves. 50% worked the other half didnt. But at least we gave them the platform to show us Edited May 17, 2018 by barrycowdrill Quote

It's clear that Parkinson DOES play youngsters in the first team if they are good enough. Our academy has been substantially down graded since we left the Premier League and had to face all our financial problems. If anyone is at all interested in what happened to some of the stars of our academy from 2016 and 2017, I posted about then recently over on Nuts - http://forum.boltonnuts.co.uk/t17848p30-connor-hall-unhappy-bunny#364707 Quote

However, as we were struggling for goals AND results at the end of the season there was potentially scope for Hall to be included on the bench.. thats certainly the talk that was going round game - game so i cant imagine hes that far off. no smoke without fire & all that.. what wouldve been the worst that happened? he got thrown on against Birmingham or Burton and didnt do anything? no one else did anyway that opportunity no doubt says more about the lack of options in the 1st team squad than him being in blistering form in the U23's but however it came about the option was there non the less Edited May 17, 2018 by barrycowdrill Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Strange thing is I'm sure I was told early in the season that Lee thought Hall was good enough. Now we're hearing the opposite. Was it better when we had the stiffs playing. Quote

He wouldn't have been picked last season unless Le Fondre was unavailable because he was the same type of player and build as Alf (see link below). As Parkinson could not see Le Fondre and Hall working on the pitch it had to be one or the other. There was no point putting Hall on the bench if Le Fondre was already down as a sub - as per the last game - so clearly there was 'smoke without fire' amongst the fans in the lead up to the Forest match - where Le Fondre came off the bench to score one and assist for the other two. Clearly Parkinson made absolutely the right call - I doubt anybody could disagree with that surely? Hall could I guess have been named as sub in the games Le Fondre started but that would have meant he was the direct replacement for him (Parkinson not believing they could play in the same game together - see link) and that I guess would have placed him above Wilbraham in the pecking order for striker substitute which would have made no sense - substituting a player (Alf) who presumably wasn't doing on that day against that defence - with an identical replacement (Hall). Surely the correct answer would be to try a different type of player (Wilbraham). I don't doubt IF Hall really had the class and quality to be in the team at his age, a player like Le Fondre, or a manager like Parkinson simply would be blocking his way. Which again leads you back to the old saying 'if you are good enough, you are old enough' and at this stage in his career, is simply not good enough and deemed so by the manager and coaches who mentor him every day. http://forum.boltonnuts.co.uk/t17704-connor-hall-too-similar-to-adam-le-fondre-says-bolton-boss Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 (edited) what has it cost us to run the academy for the last 5 or 6 years im thinking you must know to decide its worth keeping No idea what it cost but KA feels it’s an expense worth persevering with and he’s committed to keeping us at level 2 status rather than go for level 3 which is cheaper option. jmjhb Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Didn't Huddersfield get rid of their academy? Though I suppose they are in the PL now Quote
Guest Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Clough and Holding sold last year To be pedantic Clough played this year and came through academy. Not sure the ‘another year’ is fair when we have sold 2 academies in last 2 seasons for £5m plus. And kept the club afloat Quote
Dr Faustus Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Didn't Huddersfield get rid of their academy? Though I suppose they are in the PL now They gave up their academy as they are in the catchment area for too many teams. They moved from EPPP cat ii to cat IV, similar to us. They have Jon Stead as the sole graduate to play in the prem. Amazed at how few Bolton scouts I see at the younger age- we must be missing out on talent, and seeing the now under 9s play grass roots teams, they ain't all that. Dale Stephens, Joel Coleman both born in the town and picked up by clubs further afield. Quote
Dr Faustus Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Been thinking about this; Nolan Hunt JOB Holding Mooy? Vaz Te? Strong Aljofree? Holden? How many of our graduates have graced the EPL since its inception? Darby Phillips Redfearn? Ooh, this might be interesting *Enter Malc, or someone with a link Quote
Dr Faustus Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Think a lot of them were signings mate I honestly don't know; just thinking who got their first proper wage off Warbies or Eddie, and went on to play in the current incarnation of the top fight- that is how they are rated in some quarters. Certainly more productive than Huddersfield; Gumbo might be able to shed some further light on it. My eldest plays her last game for the u17s at the weekend; I know Lostock... There is nothing to celebrate the achievement of scholars. I know others that do- get the kids in an and around the first team, celebrate their success- on or off the pitch. Quote

Parky doesn’t seem the type to risk youngsters into his team so I don't think we'll see many coming through anytime soon Quote
