I've just been reading a document from the Global Health Index that rates countries by their ability to prevent, prepare for and respond to an outbreak like coronavirus. We are second overall in the world (behind the US). And encouragingly were top of the pile for 'rapid response to and mitigation of the spread of an epidemic (God bless the NHS).

You really don't want to live in Somalia though.

Drive throughs are good now because any risk can be tested. The worry is that there is some suggestions in Japan that throat swans are only about 70% reliable fo this virus.

But if this thing breaks out in the UK are you suggesting everyone with a cough or potential symptoms - millions of people in any one day will rock up at a drive through? Can’t see that working.

One of my mates, (who's lad is at BWFC academy - tenuous link) is one of the senior managers at the NHS trust that looks after Chorley Hospital and Preston Royal  - he says they've been prepping for while, there's no beds set aside, but elective surgeries will likely get binned for a while, and they are doing drive through tests at both of those hospitals.

Patients stay in the car, get a swab and a brew whilst asked questions, tests go off to Liverpool, back in 48hrs.

Seems a really good system this.

I see the case in Bury, involves someone who has been to Italy and has self isolated upon return, and since developed symptoms.

Sensible and a good example.

looks like we are following South Korea's lead  and it should enable us to get on top  of it sooner

The more at risk patients we test, the better chance we have of slowing it down.

We've carried out almost 12,000 tests so far - 35 positive (0.29%)                                                                                           S.Korea over 100,000 tests - 4,000 positive (4%)  - 26 deaths (0.59%)                                                                                          Italy 10,000 tests - 1074 positive  (10%) - 41 deaths (4.3%)                                                                                                            USA  only 500 tests - 88 positive (17%) - 2 deaths (2.2%)                                                                                                                      France 1000 tests - 130 positive (13%) 2 deaths (1.5%)

God knows how many Iran and china have really tested.

What these figures show is common sense really, the countries that have tested large numbers numbers early on, are showing the lowest death rates, and the lowest positives. The countries that have been slow to test early are showing a much higher positive rate, which suggests they have massive amounts of positive patients walking around.

This is good for us because it indicates that we have a much truer picture of where we really are,  than almost everyone else, which means our positive patients are more likely to have isolated at an earlier stage.

I would expect USA, France and Italy true cases to grow a lot faster than ours over the next few weeks - we will probably see this manifest in higher deaths.

I think they are a few weeks further down the line than us because they didn't detect the earlier cases as quickly as we did.

But right now if you got a sore throat and a cough you’d assume it just a cold and carry on. Because you’ve had no known contact. But if there are people undetected out there you’d be spreading it round. This is the thing if in a week or two there are thousands of cases what do people who feel a bit ill do? Rock up for a test? Even drive through testing surely becomes a bit impractical if you need to test hundreds of thousands of people a day.
I don’t know. To me there is likely a point where you have to do what China did and treat based on symptom severity.

I'm going to drink beer every day from now on.

If I don't catch Covid19 this will be concrete evidence that beer is the infection's natural enemy.

If I do catch it, I will drink beer and see if I live. If I do, it will be proof that beer kills it.

If I die, you may want to let the scientists know that beer might not be the answer.

For now, beer is winning.

What if you’re a ray gun? Give up the holy word of Allah and drink Newcy Brown to save their lives?
