So a question for everyone. My 76 year old father in law has lived alone for 4 years since his wife died. My wife and I are his only family. He has literally no friends and doesn’t know his neighbours. He’s normally very happy with his solitary existence but he lives 40 miles away from us. He bought a load of shopping 2 weeks ago and hasn’t left the house since. We haven’t been to visit him. But he now needs a few essentials and some prescriptions collecting from the chemist. I was going to head down early next week to sort him out. He’s clear he doesn’t want me coming in so I thought all fine. But now I read that the housing minister is getting a shit load of grief for doing exactly this. Should I be going?

Phone his local council they should have something in place. Appreciate this is not ideal, have a similar issue myself.

If they dont come up with the goods then do what you need to.

Criticism of Jenrick completely out of line in my view and I'm no Tory.

The lack of testing in this country is a f****** joke.  All this bullshit about the Government "doing the right thing at the right time" is starting to grate now, especially as the right time was weeks before our lot started to wake up to the problem.

Thanks. He’s the sort who hates asking for help so my fear is that he ends up going out himself. He’s got emphysema and a heart condition so chances are that if he catches this he’s unlikely to fight it off.

Wish I had an answer for your question. But it’s such a tough dilemma. Without  the test the rules would probably suggest that you’ve both got to isolate.

Thanks Wiggy I know the crack about them not wanting to ask for help and balancing against them trying to do everything themselves, it was an issue for me before Covid let alone during!

As I say you should be able to get some help from your f-I-l's local authority. If it's not forthcoming just do what you need to but adhere to social distancing. Cant see you getting in any trouble for it, they have bigger fish to fry.

This is surprising given the low rate of spread in Germany. We waited 14 weeks between having our first case and going into lockdown but Germany was even longer....maybe it's because their population is spread out over a much bigger area?

Had a big dilemma last couple of days.

My partner works for the same hospital as me. She normally has a back office role (like me) but since Covid-19 she has been working in a team monitoring real time staffing levels and helping move nurses to where they are most needed.

Tuesday she came home with a headache, was fine later that day, did the algorithm on NHS 111 which said she was Kosher and went in for her shift at 7 the following morning. She got turfed out by a senior nurse which is completely understandable given she's mooching around wards. She's still absolutely fine but cant work from home.

Strictly speaking this puts me on 14 days self isolation, but she's fine and so am I. Problem is my mum is in the 'shielding' group, I do all her shopping and she's okay till weekend. Mum has dementia and I don't want to frighten the shit out of her for nothing, and I genuinely think it's nothing. When the Mrs gets a cold she's on her arse for a week. She's been turfed out cos she's working for a senior nurse that's playing safe which is understandable.

Beyond mum, the mrs or me getting seriously Ill this is the worst case scenario for me.

Asked of the Mrs can be tested and escalated to a very senior level, given 2 for 1 benefit to the Trust, but cant see her being prioritised.

Wft do I do?

A bit out there (and perhaps a suggestion after a couple of glasses of red), but do you know someone who would do her shop for you and leave it at her front door? You could drive over at the same time and be there when the drop of is made - she would then get the delivery and you'd be there. You wouldn’t go into the house and would need to speak to her either from a very safe distance (if she has a large front garden for example) or from the car (on the phone) where she can see you. That way she gets her food, you're there for the drop off, but you’re never anywhere close to her.

That is on the basis that you can get safely from your home to your car without coming into contact with anyone. Also, would you not coming into the house lead to her asking questions and becoming concerned? Perhaps style it out as trying to stick more closely to the social distancing rules?

Thanks Jol. Mum is in supported housing flats. Luckily she has a front door and middle door with a window in it which I have been speaking to her through from the last three weeks. If I go in the flat I ask her to go in her bedroom out of the way.

This is the issue,I'm confident I can keep mum safe doing what I'm doing for the last three weeks. Though following the rules strictly mean I cant leave the house at all even though Mrs is fine. If she worked anywhere else than the hospital she wouldn't have been sent home, if she was doing her regular job no-one would have batted an eyelid. Problem is she's been reporting to a senior nurse who is playing it safe which is completely understandable.

The Jenrick thing is piss poor shit stirring I think, and a terrible look for the Guardian. And I say that as someone who sticks up for the media more than most on here.

It's essential travel.

They developed a test 3 weeks before us, they have many more laboratories. They've tested 1.3 million, weve not done 300k. We are 55th in the world for tests per population, yet have 5th most deaths. There's something seriously wrong.

Friend who works at the hospital says it’s getting pretty full now with CV patients.

Next 7 days is defcon 626849.

That sound about right Kent? (She usually works in the eye department but has been swapped to main wards)

Sounds about right yes. The first of what could be fairly regular peaks until we reach herd immunity/readily available vaccine.

14 weeks? You sure about that? I thought it was more like 6/7 weeks.

You're right amigo - 7 it is.  I was reading the fortnights as months. Still it's way too long to do start doing something about it.

Old castle?

Liverpool? Closed. Post Office, closed, Tea Rooms, closed. Go Ape, closed. If I’ve missed anything , closed.

Seriously, all roads will be blocked by police. There are paths that I’m sure some will attempt to bypass the blocks.

In all the years I spent in Bolton I think I went up Rivi a handful of times. What’s the sudden fascination with it? Is it like Disney land or something that’s been built there and drawing people in?

Good Friday tradition, go up the pike

Not done it in years but back in the 80s you'd get loads of gypos rocking up a few days before and they'd have a bit of a fair ground going on

Was always packed, was always set on fire

Ah now see that makes sense I’ve just never heard of it. I just wondered what the police were expecting to be blocking off all routes

Rivi is always popular But it’s a Good Friday tradition to hike up to the Pike. There are usually mobile vendors up there at Easter.
