It's winding me up that there's not a clear and consistent hammering home of the mask message. Set the precedent now whilst you can. If we're heading into November with over 100k infections and 800 deaths a day it will be too fucking late. Again. Alternatively armed Judge Dredd characters executing instant justice in the aisles of Tesco would also work. Pour encourager les autres. It's bonkers - have to wear a mask if sat on a bus with all the windows open, but down the biscuit isle of Tesco and in the house of commons the virus must magically dissipate, so no mask required. It's basic physics - the virus particles can get into your body when you breath them in - anything that potentially reduces the amount of virus particles in the air that you breath (Wind, Barriers, Distance, reducing Frequency of exposure) reduces the chance of catching/transmitting. dr john just posted a video about it -- sums it up well Quote

Hence you get folk saying they're not wearing one because they're not as effective as N95 etc. Whereas if you reframed the discussion and emphasised that my wearing a mask protects you and your wearing a mask protects me, then most people I think would be willing to wear one on those terms. Very few people want to publicly look a selfish free riding cunt, even if they are one. That's fewer of all kinds, not just Covid. Then maybe we won't be heading into November looking at a horror show with seasonal flu on top. Edited July 8, 2020 by ProfessorWoland Quote

I think people are getting numb to the figures, and are forgetting that other than the death numbers, we aren't up to speed with capturing the spread of the virus, we are two weeks behind, at best, and will continue to be so until tracking gets better, and the cases number that we see reported are a fraction of the actual cases in the community. We've only captured a tenth of cases in testing, 80% of folk don't have bad enough symptoms to realise they have it, those tha get it bad take a while to turn up at to hospital - in short, you aren't going to know if you are in an area in the early exponential transmission phase of an local outbreak until it's already happened, and therefore if you're in an area with relativley high cases (North West at the moment), if a local outbreak happens, it's going to be more widespread, so we should be cautious until we can see that relaxing of whatever restriction has had enough time to be measured. Looked at those images on that link- they're bacterial cultures; would similar still apply to a virus? Could more get through as they are so small? Not a clue, though I would assume similar effect would be achieved. The whole face coverings issue is a cultural problem- when we've discussed it on the football threads it's clear many don't feel comfortable wearing them. It's the norm in places like Japan, when you see folk wearing them regularly (including pre covid). Quote
ErnestTurnip Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Starting to feel like a new series of Money Heist this, keeping some restrictions in place and folk on furlough until October just to give them enough time to print the money to pay for all these free gifts they're promising to dish out. Quote
gonzo Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 There’s no chance on earth you’re getting the general public to start wearing masks now. They could barely keep every fucker from rioting and going to the beach last week never mind getting folk to wear masks. Not happening. The horse had bolted. Whens this second wave coming then? 💩 Quote

What will definitely happen is that pretty much everyone in the UK will probably need to isolate at least once or twice over winter. If we're still staying off work for a temp or persistent cough that is. That's a fuck of a lot of testing going to be needed come the winter. Quote

ErnestTurnip Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I've been wearing a mask at work since I stopped working from home and went back in, never underestimate how much it winds some folk up to see you wearing one. After the novelty of pissing the outraged off by wearing one wore off I've started wearing it on one ear so it's just dangling down and then when an outraged approaches I put it on fully. Works even better. Not the height of humour and simple things amuse simple minds but it gets me closer to 5 and it gets them fuckers closer to a heart attack. Quote
