I have no way of verifying either sides figures. In all likelihood both could be exaggerated. 
I think the quoted figures are around 10k, but even if it is half that it is 5000, nearly 50% of population of The Gaza Strip is under 18 so 2500 kids. 
 

Squabble about the actual numbers but 2500 kids being killed is fucking horrific. Hamas are responsible for provoking this phase but anyone who is comfortable or accepting of those numbers is warped

I asked because some people don’t automatically accept them. Biden has thrown doubt on them and this is the quote from the BBC. 

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says 10,022 people, including 4,104 children, have been killed in the territory since Israel's campaign began

We know we can’t believe Hamas so the numbers are certainly in doubt. Doesn’t alter the fact many innocent people have been killed but narrative is important in war.

Historically whilst usually overstated their numbers are not as crazy as you might expect, clearly in current conflict usual rules have gone out of the window

Not quite that simple, I'm afraid. They were actually given 24 hours before airsrikes began, and now its almost impossible to move around with many not having the capabilites to do so and that's before you get to the sick, old, infirm, young children etc etc

This is a report from back in October about the issues then, as mentioned its now much worse due to the bombing.
