Site Supporter only1swanny Posted April 9, 2024 Site Supporter Posted April 9, 2024 Looking at the squad from that season (Wheater 9 goals, Beevers 7). we had a huge squad, no wonder we were struggling with a squad that size in League one! Quote

It's reasonable to assume the movements signify 'going deep', 'near post', 'wide, near penalty spot' or something but they don't seem to. Does anyone know for sure ? They probably change it in training every week. Pointless left hand being far post, right hand near post, both hands penalty spot, etc., because we all get to study previous games and second guess. Exactly, far be it from me to contradict my learned friend Micky I was saying that we don't seem to be able to know this weeks tic-tac signals or second guess despite having the option to study previous games.. Hmm, I think they do. But there is an opponent doing their bit to prevent it working of course, and consistency of quality of delivery also plays a part. Not easy to make them work all the time. It's unfortunate I know, but we sometimes have to come up against another set of fully paid up professional athletes who spend a whole week working hard to stop us just doing whatever the feck we want Quote
Jol_BWFC Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Just look at the Derby goal against us. Put the ball where the player is and you have a chance of scoring. Having said that, we left him totally unmarked, which didn’t help. Our corners inevitably don’t make it past their first man, so we never have a chance. Quote

To be fair, if we have that the ref gives a freekick. Loads of blocking, holding and a handball in there to boot Generally, I think we're pretty good at set-pieces in terms of chances created from first and second contacts and also good at defending them. Every fan thinks their team is shit at corners Quote

Quality defender Seagraves for 3rd tier. Quote

Get with the programme, marking an opponent in the box just isn't the done thing any more, what did that ever achieve. Quote

Whitesince63 Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 If the cross is delivered well you’ll score goals but it seems something of a lost art these days as headed goals seem to be lesser rated than those from tippy tappy. We’ve already mentioned the Morais success rate but without the quality of the cross neither Wheats nor Beevers would have got anywhere near the number they did. Probably the best exponent of all was Becks whose speared in crosses were sublime and all Uniteds strikers needed to do was get a head on them, which they did regularly. Quote
Site Supporter desperado Posted April 10, 2024 Site Supporter Posted April 10, 2024 “Should either player not feature, however, Bolton may find some solace in statistics – which point to a surprisingly positive trend. The pair have only both been absent from a starting line-up at the same time once – a 2-1 home win against Wycombe Wanderers in February which also represented the last run-out for top-scorer Dion Charles. Santos has played 40 games in all competitions and missed 14; on those occasions, Bolton have won eight, drawn two, and lost twice – against Championship side Middlesbrough in the League Cup and Carlisle United at home in League One. Sheehan has played 49 times in all competitions and missed seven games entirely. Wanderers have won five of those outings, their only defeat at home to Bristol Rovers in December.” From the BEN. So not all doom and gloom if Sheehan and/or Santos aren’t fit. Would prefer them in, but a decent record without them. I’d hope Toal central, Forrester (or Jones) right and Iredale Left. Can’t make my mind up whether Morley (direct replacement) or Dempsey (Tommason as CDM) in if Sheehan unfit. Quote

Members DazBob Posted April 10, 2024 Members Posted April 10, 2024 There's no doubt that Santos is a huge player for us, in that he dictates how we play and how far up the pitch we defend. Also, on his day he probably is the best defender in this league. However, the stats above prove we can more than live without him. Maybe his absence gives the others around him chance to have more influence on the game. I'd not be averse to selling him in the summer, regardless of which division we're in, if a decent offer comes in. Quote
radcliffe white Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 (edited) Santos can be replaced Yengi still has him in his pocket from the game at fratton regards sheehan it’s Dempsey for me Edited April 10, 2024 by radcliffe white Quote
