Them Wigan C **nts.

Ok fair fucks they won the league an’ all that, but tonight i had to endure a midnight train full of the turds on a train from Manc to Wigan with loads of feral scruffs singing “Bolton get battered” blah fucking blah.

They can enjoy their day in the sun, but we’re on our way back and our paths will no doubt cross again.

Karma.

For the record, I very much wanted them to beat Derby. I was merely pointing out that as they didn’t, they’re falling down the league.

I also want them to beat Pompey and Peterborough and Barnsley etc. (and still go down).

If Derby pip us by a point, its not because they beat Wigan. Its because we lost to Carlisle.

Look after the things you can control, laugh at others.

Or Reading, or Bristol Rovers.

FWIW, I think Peterborough are the ones to worry about. Watched their game v Oxford. Very tidy team.  Think Pompey will fade..

It's only because we're currently in the same division. I'm looking forward to a future when I can consider them as frequently as I consider Salford. Which isn't very often at all!

This. Historically they’re a non-league team. I’d love them to revert to type.

In the best outcome this season, with us going up and them down, obviously there would be a couple of leagues between us and suddenly we’d feel worlds apart. Have they been 2 leagues above us at any point? I can only think it would be our L2 season but can’t remember if they were L1 or Champ.

They're a league 1/2 side given their attendances.

I've always considered us a Championship side with occasional forays into the premier and league 1. Again based on nothing more than attendance. I think the days of rich benefactors have long gone.

Agreed on that.

Wigan have the 8th best average attendance in the league.

Better than Peterborough.

Maybe somewhat surprising, but over the years they have grown their support.

Should they drop again though, then those newer fans may drop off.

Could say the same about our much improved gates tbf

Madness, mate. Wigan are a fucking irrelevance, but you've got to want your promotion rivals to lose to them.

Villa were a disappointment yesterday, even a point would have sufficed.

Because away teams can have 5,000 tickets and Barnsley, Pompey & Derby will have taken a few there already. Add in the fact that half of the grounds in this league hold under 10k and it's not hard to be fairly high up the attendances.

You need to tell that to ManU, City, Liverpool, Chelsea…

Need I go on?

League positions are never decided on the outcome of one game. Teams at the top will drop points to those near the bottom over the course of a season.

Indeed. Was no relevance who Derby were playing other than I wanted them to lose

Exactly as it should be.

I've taken into account the general growth in crowds since the 80s.

I would suggest they've grown their fanbase beyond that since Whelan's days of success higher up the pyramid.

That's why I can see it dropping off again if they have a period of time lower down.

Not sure the club has the history engrained in its population yet.

I would still put wigans support below a few a couple of sides that are restricted by the size of the grounds and especially the away fans they can accommodate. Peterborough only average a couple of hundred less than Wigan . Bristol rovers  and  may be Oxford .

That stick them down below half way in league 1

Of course it plays a part- as it does with us. If you look at their away following though, that is also fairly decent.

It would make the comparison of gates more accurate if away fans were taken out.  There are loads of websites etc showing away fans league tables, I'm yet to see anything that shows home fans league tables.  It would have a relatively big bearing on us and Wigan, and would show Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers etc in a better light.  Accy would be even worse, a small ground with a relatively big away capacity (half the ground!).

It does seem odd that folk seem desperate to label Wigan tinpot, small time, league 2 size.  Clearly they are on a different level for support to the sort of club you'd expect in L2 (Morecambe, Accy, Cheltenham, FGR, Barrow, Fleetwood, Crawley, Harrogate, Sutton, Salford, Colchester, etc etc).  They take decent away followings as you say, the above teams take family and friends and a few more and don't create an atmosphere anywhere unless its very local.  Not sure what's to be gained from making them sound any smaller than they are (far smaller than us, and we aren't huge), what's the big deal?

There’s a definite obsession with Wigan from many on here.
