Them Wigan C **nts.

Ok fair fucks they won the league an’ all that, but tonight i had to endure a midnight train full of the turds on a train from Manc to Wigan with loads of feral scruffs singing “Bolton get battered” blah fucking blah.

They can enjoy their day in the sun, but we’re on our way back and our paths will no doubt cross again.

Karma.

At 34 and growing up in Swinton I hated United more than anyone else, with Blackburn a close 2nd. I still look out for United losing, Blackburn has lessened somewhat but I think the Wigan thing has definitely escalated since we dropeed out the Prem.

There seems to be genuine needle and I think social media certainly exacerbates it too. Throw in the comments about going to admin and I think a lot, certainly has stoked the fire.

Either way I hope that we paste them tomorrow, we are overdue a good result against this lot.

Why this need to hate anybody ?... support your club yes, spend ridiculous amounts following a dream yes, kick the fucking dog when you lose yes, but why does hate come into anything that just doesn't matter...

I reserve my hatred for things that deserve it ...everytime I drive near Derian House my blood runs cold with the sadness that fills that place and that disease that makes it necessary...now I hate that bastard with a passion and it cares little for what colour football shirt you buy.

Hate in the world of football doesnt bear the same connotations as it does in the outisde world.

I don't truly hate anyone and would share a pint with any football fan from any football club in the world.

Its just a bit of fun and banter isnt it. Separates normal games from derby games. Tribalism.

Its the lack of a proper derby that produces this thinking though thats my point.

If you support Blackpool your big derby is Preston. If you're Villa its Brum, if you're Blackburn its Burnley.

Here sits a proper rival and derby there for the taking.

my concern for wigan goes when we are not in the same division, though

like i say, its prob geographical as much as owt

ive only ever come into contact with one wigan fan - to be fair, i hated the little shit

hes the kneeling fucker on that pic outside the ground

Generational thing. I started going in 1977 and when we stuffed the filth 3-0 in 1978 that was only 20 years after the Cup Final. So anyone at Burnden that night late 30s or older will have either been at Wembley or would have remembered the celebrations. Plus there we were in the same division as them and stuffing them. So not hard to see why a genuine feeling of rivalry was there. Of course directions shifted so dramatically over the next 25 years that, even when got to play them regularly in the PL, some of the edge was off it.

Never been too fussed about other NW teams. The daftness of harping on about much bigger teams came across to me when Bury were playing away at Notts with a chance of going out of the league. Bury fan at work dragged a couple of us up to it as we're so close to it; all the bloody game all they did was chant anti Bolton songs. I mean I could imagine it in celebration of not going down at the end, but not during a game that could define your existence. Or maybe the chants did define their existence!

For all that, I do fucking hate Wolves.

I'll always remember their inbred fans who came in front of the Sir Nat statue during a work day to celebrate us entering administration a few years ago.

Absolute nonces.

The United thing is just embarrassing

It really isn't.

As a kid, growing up in Bolton, when your fellow Boltonian mates are rag fans, lording it over you saying how shit Bolton are.  That's where my hatred comes from.

You seem fixated with this idea that we somehow see them as rivals.  Most of us don't.  We just hate the horrible, arrogant cunts.  I struggle to see why you don't understand this.

No different to city or Liverpool lording or in terms of arrogance, in fact I’d say the generation of city fans now are miles worse than what United was

whats embarrassing is that Bolton fans chant about United and probably never even seen us play them

Well, last week I was at a meeting in Wigan, afterwards got changed into my running gear and had a Bolton training top on. Some bloke stopped me and we had a chat, he complained his grandkids were all Bolton fans despite being born in Wigan, had a quick chat about the league cup games that had just been played, shook hands and wished each other the best for the season.

All in all, a very pleasant exchange.

Yeah but he'd had his hand stuck down his pants fondling his sweaty arse crack and balls as you were talking

The number of kids back then who were Man U fans was far, far greater than City or Liverpool.  In fact, I don't think I ever knew a single Boltonian who was a City fan growing up.

Yeh, I suppose it comes down to the phrase. "Rivals" usually means others who you are competing against. Some times in my time watching we were genuinely that (on the pitch, not in terms of financial clout by light years). But for the most part in this context, it is, as you say, just contempt.

That must be a very fresh generation. It's not THAT long since we spent 11 seasons in the same division.

Mainly United & Liverpool at my high school

few Bolton and then the bury fuckers

but United fans never took the piss it was scrapping tackle with bury as they absolutely detested us

city fans now are unbearable around this way, and the ones I know make no attempt to go despite schools giving free tickets out

This ... 100%.

Pre M61 Bolton based Stretford fans I knew had to go past Burnden to get to Salford. Wankers.

The media wank-fest over then was excruciating. In my book Charton, Best, Law ... all over-hyped wankers. I think Benfica were cheated. Facts mean nothing. I fckg loathed these tossers.

Spot on Horst

I could never see Wigan as a rival but definitely annoying bstards with their hatred against us. For that reason I hope they end up non league playing Bury who are the same size of club

100%

Ask my uncle who is approaching 80 about man u fans . He hates them  all of them. Wanderers fans don't just dislike man u because of the sky/fergie  era it goes way way further back than that. We might not be rivals on the pitch at the moment but that changes nothing .

Tell your fucking town that ,see how far you get.

And for the record I have way to much respect for my dog to kick it if we get beat by a club like the "tics"

Wigan are just the new Tranmere to me.  The fact we have been playing them (often as underdogs) is a reflection on how badly run we have been as a club.

Both Wigan and Tranmere have had runs that way exceeded their more usual position in the pyramid,  Tranmere are back there, Wigan will be too unless someone props them up financially.

I am far too old to hate anyone over football but I do think I have a reason to dislike every single one of the teams in the professional league. Mainly for petty reasons. This means there are very few games I watch where I do not favour one team over the other due to the level of pettiness.

There is not a single other team that  I care about their results unless they affect us in the league. (So for instance if Wigan are in the league above us want them to lose, but Tranmere now they are below us are an irrelevance).

Bizarrely the one exception to the dislike would be Wycombe where despite numerous faults such as quartered shirts, trying to be Wanderers, Gareth Ainsworth not being their manager, play in an industrial estate etc I still quite like.

While I somewhat agree with your point, as evidenced by Desperado’s flurry of anti-Bolton tweets (not suggesting that we haven’t returned the favour), you simply cannot take this stance.
Wigan fans have done everything in their power to get merely noticed and furthermore hated by us in the last two decades.

I first heard that Wigan hated us on Soccer AM in the early 2000’s. Their fans were on that week and spoke of a dislike for Bolton. Had no idea about this. We’d never played them in my lifetime and they were two divisions below.

Fast forward to the summer of 05. Wigan had been promoted to the PL. Fans all over our forums trying to get noticed. ”We hate Bolton” songs at games between us. You were a bit of bogey team then too. I still didn’t care.

I don’t even recall being remotely bothered that you’d won the FA Cup either.

Throw in your antics when we were struggling financially, crowd trouble, the younger generation growing up with us playing each other, lots of social media antics etc. ‘Hatred’ if you can call is that is bound to happen.

Both clubs have their fair share of bellends, but we wouldn’t be playing at 12:30 tomorrow if your fans hadn’t been so relentlessly trying to get noticed by us. They have continuously tried to stoke up this ‘rivalry’.

Agree totally - dont have to be rivals to hate the bastards - growing up in the 60s/70s it became ingrained
