They already have been! From what I can gather it's supporters of Bury FC (aka F*ck the Phoenix) who caused the trouble and are responsible for threats on social media etc. They're urging for a No vote to the merger. They own Gigg Lane but have no team and won't get 450K promised by the Council if they vote No. The other lot, AFC, have a team that's thriving in the NW Counties and if merged could play at Gigg and have a reasonable attempt at getting back into the league. All the antagonism they've faced from the other lot, I imagine may lead to many of them now voting No too. 2 bald men fighting over a comb. Quote
radcliffe white Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 AFC are going bonkers they footed the police bill Saturday for around 10 protesters from bury fc Quote

Then afc should be able to take them to court and buy the ground from the dinosaurs. If they've got no team, then how are they funding the upkeep of Gigg etc? Certainly can't expect any council funding. Quote

An old colleague who's against the merger thinks the Council will still fund them (FC) anyway, when they've no team to speak of. Splitting an already small fanbase can't work for either side. Quote

The town has no appetite for a football team other than ones with the name Manchester on it. As @Trafpointed out. A favourite son convinced his billionaire mate to pump money into a Man U vanity project a few miles away. We won’t see them again if they split. Oh well. Quote
Leyther_Matt Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 This is was pretty much how I envisaged it would have panned out if we had ended up down that road. Thank fuck we dodged that. Quote

Don’t agree with that, there’s obviously an appetite you could say that about loads of small clubs where all you see is shirt wearers from premiership clubs Quote

Fc Man U we’re getting bigger gates on at gigg lane than Bury fc. Loads are two timers with premier league clubs or more rags/massives. Felt sorry for the minority that followed them and just them but the town has turned their back on the club through apathy. Amazed how anyone wants them to continue as AFC as 3 years ago they all supported historic Bury fc Quote

Some of the toxicity spouted about us was quite surprising from 'decent' folk. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure some of our lot would do similar with other clubs, however the open hatred was a touch surprising in the circumstances, and since then I've had nowt but disregard for them. Wasn't too fussed previously, but I wouldn't put a penny in a bucket outside the UniBol if they appeared again. Quote

Traf Posted September 5, 2022 Posted September 5, 2022 They asked us for money years ago, lots of us donated. They asked us to attend a fixture when we had no game, so we did. We spent most of that game listening to sick chants about Nat Lofthouse and loads of anti-Bolton songs. They took great delight in Ken Anderson taking us towards the abyss. Fuck 'em, I hope they never come back. Quote

Members DazBob Posted September 6, 2022 Members Posted September 6, 2022 I passionately wanted them to go under after the Nat Lofthouse flag and songs about Muamba ... then on the local news there was a feature on an old bloke who'd been going to Gigg Lane all his life and now he didn't know what to do with himself. My heart broke for him and my stance softened. Ultimately though, whilst there will be a few cases such as that old bloke, the vast majority of the town just don't give a fuck. They call Manchester "Town" and call Bury "Bury". Fucking oddballs. When questioned why they support either City or the Rags their justification was because Bury is in Manchester. When the club folded far less people cared than should have done so. I hope, for the sake of that old duffer alone, they do get football back at Gigg Lane, but the town as a whole really doesn't deserve it to ... and looking at the squabbling that is currently going on, it could well be that it never happens. The old bloke will inevitably die before long (if he hasn't already done so) and I can go back to not being arsed again. Quote

My sympathies are also for the genuine stories of something akin to grief when your club is no longer there. There were other stories I heard of family routines where you basically only see your grandparents or uncle regularly because you meet up for the game. We all have mates and/or see family members that are based almost exclusively on either going to or discussing the game. It doesn't matter how many 17 year olds lacking brain cells choose to behave like bell ends in the name of being a Bury fan or a Bolton-hater, it doesn't alter the real lives that are affected when a club, no matter how big or small, goes under. That could so easily have been us and yes there would have been Wigan, Bury, Tranmere fans dancing on our graves partly because of the impression they have of us due to the behaviour of the few, not the majority. PS that old bloke you mention, I remember going to Gigg Lane a few times in the 80s and 90s and he became a "steward" (well he had a flourescent jacket on while watching the game from the main stand, this was not a job like being in the away end for Utd v Leeds). He looked well past it then so he's doing well if he's still around! Quote
