Mantra- here's one for you.

Article in the BN about Sheehan playing for Wales.

One paragraph says he attempted 42 passes with a 100% success rate. Very good.

The paragraph before says he nearly got an assists but a team mate just failed to connect with his cross!

How does that work? Are crosses not counted as passes?

Maybe you’ve answered that yourself Jacket in that assists are counted separately to passes in the stats lists? Hard to see the difference sometimes. 🥴

Maybe they did but the person who was supposed to be on the end of it wasn't in the right place

How do you determine that though?

When is a pass accurate and when is it not?

Quite often a pass needs to go into space that a runner should be occupying and not necessarily to feet.

Part of the issue with over reliance on one stat or another.

That thing again, where we may have more passes and possession, a higher passing accuracy, but fewer shots and a defeat.

It’s passion we need not passing or possession! 🥴

Assists separate too eh!

Of course they are counted and that's OK for analysis of its own, but if you don't also include them as an overall measure of passing then you can potentially get some skewed figures.

Passing pressure free, sideways and backwards can make a false measure that doesn't reflect the overall quality of the approach.

If those passes are also accompanied by a fair number of "attacking" passes and assists then that might reflect the situation more fully.

The issue I've got is the potential for a virtual addiction to the statistical process, and perhaps losing sight of what everyone can see is the reality on the pitch.

Of course we don't know the exact approach the coaches take, but we can see the same struggles being repeated.

Seems fair enough.

Except the bit about him doing ok on the pitch, which I don't agree with.

How effective his "coaching" of his fellow strikers is open to debate, but Dion is doing well with goals scored, and Vic has also got more than maybe we thought he would.

Certainly room for improvement with Dan though.

A bit like that Burnley player Coyle signed "to improve player morale".

I can get Cam's role as a mentor & potential coach. Even coming on in the final few minutes to play a holding role but he must be blocking other players.

That's the badger. Seriously, wtf ?

Played 9 (mostly off the bench) scored 1. Belting Bruce Forsyth imitator.

Been manager of Bognor Regis fc for 5 years, which at that level is quite some longevity.

That goal was a cracker though! Injury time equaliser v Brum, came from 2 down, superb postage stamp free kick, wouldn't mind one of those on Saturday.

It all read well until the final sentence.

”He comes on and gives his all”

Fuck me Ian, we’d all give our all if you put us on, that is not a measure for being any good.

In fact, thinking about it - it does read well but it essentially says that the bits he’s good at is what a coach should be doing, and he’s alright when he’s on the pitch because he gives his all. So he’s no use as a player - pretty much what we all already know, and as Casino says he’s not exactly going to say it as such when asked.
