Thought he might have gone to someone like Leicester

They were on the lookout for a new keeper and have the City connection with their manager

He was always going to spend a lot of time picking the ball out of the net at Burnley despite his u21 performances

The record for goals conceded in the Central League is held by one G Banks of Chesterfield Reserves.

He was about 17 at the time and Chesterfield were by far the weakest team in that league. Most teams were reserves of top flight teams plus some notable second tier clubs of the day, such as Liverpool.

Me too.

Chap made no effort to play the ball, and simply obstructed the keeper.

Don't know why obstruction has gone out of the game.

Would I say it was a foul? No he was too weak in claiming it and made it easy for the Luton player to get in his way.

Do the current rules and recent decisions show it's a foul? I'd say yes can't touch keepers without giving away a foul at the minute.

"He made it easy for the Luton player to get in his way"

One of the most bizarre things I've read.

If an opponent isn't prepared to go for the ball but instead go for the player (keeper) then there is nothing the keeper can do to prevent it, other than taking evasive action and not going for the ball himself.

He can't do that, and that is why the game has referees.

Nowt to do with keepers getting favourable treatment; the same would apply if it was an outfield player.

Who said the quote?

A keeper shouldn't be allowed a free run to catch the ball

Defending a box like that, players will jostle etc

Trafford misjudged and the Luton player did nowt wrong

I meant he was weak in his attempt to come for the ball it wasn't like the Luton player needed to anything but take a slight step backwards, had he launched himself at Traff then I'd have more sympathy for his, in today's football, valid claims but he still needs to be more commanding in his area. Even before he collided with the Luton bloke he looked half hearted in his attempt.

... apart from look behind his to see where Traff was, then back into him without any effort to go for the ball, then bang him with hip/arse.

Yep, keepers are over-protected.

Yep, Trafford needs to own that space.

But is WAS a foul by today's standards.

I'm well(ish) thanks, and my partner is recovering from breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The operation was at the end of June 2022 and the major treatments ran from that October to March 2023.

I just don't have as much free time as I once did!

Quite.

I refer back to my previous point though: in days of yore refs would give a free kick for obstruction, where a player blocked another, without necessarily making a "direct foul".

If ever there was an example if it, this was it.

He got away with it, as many others try to do. Some succeed, others don't.

Some refs see it as foul play, some don’t. Which is strange because I thought a law of the game wasn’t a matter of opinion but a matter of fact.

Yes, you're correct.

They may also not be a great position to make a proper assessment (as a linesman might not be) or his sense of the contact may vary from that of others.

When it is seen by var, then perhaps you would expect more consistency. Unfortunately, as we've seen this season, that isn't the case.
