Leyther_Matt Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Point gained in the circumstances with such an unfamiliar defensive set up. Barnsley could have done home and hosed by the hour mark - with two assists from Sheehan - but Baxter has been worth a few points this season and proved it again today. Think the pace of the game probably took Taylor by surprise and he was goosed by the end. He’ll have certainly known he was in a game. Think that’s the 321st time we’ve faced Devante Cole and that’s the first time he’s ever looked like a decent player, and I thought McAtee was a real handful of times. Proper raw and genuinely looks and almost plays like a rugby league player (as runs in the family) but a real physical presence and always on the move. 45-65 minutes was probably the biggest 20 minute panic since the Boxing Day sales opened at Next, but had we had another few minutes at the end (as we would have had if we still played the same rules as the start of the season…) then I reckon we’d have nicked it. Watched back the save at the end and it was certainly going straight in. Thomason a big miss and Sheehan won’t play as badly as that for the rest of his career. Ashworth excellent again and no idea why we don’t use him more often as he forever seems to be in space. Likewise, the few times we played it in behind in the first half we had some success with such a high line but then seemed to just sack it off. Posted it at the time and still think Charles was way off the pace on the two occasions we put great balls across the 6 yard box that were just screaming out for him to finish. Hopefully we get a few numbers back for Tuesday. Win that and it all looks rosy again. Quote

It was 80/1 In other betting news, Zac came in again but I cashed out on last goal as thought we'd get another so missed out on another £100 As for the game, they could've gone 2-0 up and we could've done 2-1 up so draw about right Quote

Biggish Dave Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Not read back but Charles and Vic offered nothing for us today. Dempsey must have pulled 3 or 4 chances across the face for them to tap in. Bod is very intelligent and a great sub. Collins made some good runs and had a couple of decent efforts from distance too - we'll soon knock that out of him. Belting cross for the goal too. Oh, and them who deride CMG - just look what's happened to Ashworth when he has a run of games. MOTM (or POYM for wankers) 2 games running now. Looks quality. Maybe give CMG a chance too hey or is that not the Bolton way Quote

I agree with much of what you said, but I must have watched a different Sheehan in the first half. I thought he ran the game, some of his pivots, change of direction and passing was pure quality. Less effective in the 2nd half but I partly blame the kamikaze tactics despite Barnsley's higher press. Got clattered half a dozen times but kept coming back for more. 2 long passes to put forward players through in the first half stand out. A few have thought Iredale was poor including my step daughter that I was sat with but I thought he played quite well! So we all see it different. Quote

Agreed, playing another decent 3rd division team. One with a plan B. One that doesn't carry on playing in our own half, with as pointed out above an unfamiliar defence. We could have really shit the bed today, against a side we will be fighting for promotion agains. Quote

Ashworth was a warrior today, wasn’t taking any of there shithouse tactics, if we are honest we got out of jail that period just after halftime, but think we deserve that bit of luck. Taylor will be fine once he finds his legs Quote

Tbf I do like him Sheehan and you’re right he did a great job at getting us out of trouble on a good few occasions, but the mistakes he did make would have been seriously costly with a better finish at the end of it and that’s the sort of thing we just don’t expect of him. Looked knackered just before he went off, but as you say it probably took a lot out of him when they were taking turns to flatten him. He also had a bit of a mental moment (right before he nearly put one on a plate for them) and went absolutely flying in to one of theirs, arms raised and nowhere near the ball. Very uncharacteristic, but it’ll do us good to have GT back as his protector. I agree about Iredale btw, thought he was solid as the one experienced player at the back. Quote

Duck Egg Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Surprised at the comments re support. I thought it was pretty impressive in terms of noise today. In terms of numbers, it's bloody phenomenal. Quote

Some of our best chances aren't even registered on there! 🤣 Must have been about 4/5 really good opportunities where we've got it to the the by-line, to be pulled back/across with no one getting on the end of them. Something that can be improved upon, I'm sure with Collins addition. Quote

We might batter someone for 90 minutes, then they score a flukey winner in injury time. That's football. Especially in League 1. I'm forever amazed people aren't used to it yet after watching the game for decades. Quote

Too many teams recently have latched onto systematically hammering into Sheehan as the easy way to disrupt us. It actually took Barnsley till half time, he had a fair bit of space first half and we got out easily. They upped the work rate 10% from the whistle into second half and tore into him. It's going to keep on happening and we may need to consider reverting to having Tommo at the base and Sheehan furthest forward, in the area where he did a load of damage v Derby. Quote

Can I turn it on its head for the others. If we had travelled to Barnsley today and not won that game we would have been livid. They had a number of great chances at one nil up. Yes OK once they conceded they could have lost it but that happens away from home when you don’t put the game to bed. We should have been out of sight. Quote
Dr Faustus Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Cba going back and checking so I apologise- anyone else notice Gethin Jones pic on the screen when we equalised? Now, my eyesight is shot, but fuck me that must’ve been some header! Quote
Biggish Dave Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 I'll tell you what got my goat aswell today and needs stamping out by red cards - we took a quick throw in but Cole threw another ball on the pitch to slow it down and make us re-take it. Granted, it didn't stop a dangerous attack but if all you get is a yellow, what's stopping anyone doing it to thwart a late attack Quote
