When Rioch came to Bolton in 1992 we won three of our first give games then drew 1 and lost 5 of the next six. A very similar thing happened when Big Sam arrived in 1999. It is very early days and SS

For those slagging off SS, you are barking up the wrong tree. We can only even get in to the foothills of judging the guy after he has had a transfer window. He has been dealt a talented but very one-

Awful today mate - Everything that could go wrong did.

How those same players who created 40 odd chances on Tuesday looked so inept today is something that will give SS nightmares this week.

He's got a big job on his hands

Initial thoughts on that shambles today:

-5 at the back needs binning off as soon as possible next season. Any decent front 3 can isolate the gap between the wing backs and outer CBs. We got ripped apart the first 20 mins as there's always an out ball high up the pitch to the wide men. Connell was regularly pinging it to either wing knowing Jalo and Humphreys had tons of space

-we need to invest in full backs next season (and hope Conway is good enough). Moving to a back 4 with Johnston and Cogley didn't really change anything but bringing proper full backs on in Jones and Murphy did stop them getting on top and meant we cut off their out ball, but Jones and Murphy aren't the level we need

-our strikers and most the midfield is far too soft. Men against boys stuff for most of the game with multiple players wimping out of tackles. McAtee especially winds me up because he looks big and should be getting stuck in but isn't.

-stating the obvious here but mcatee and Collins aren't a viable front pair. Really evident when we were on top in the second half that they both want to pull out wide and neither is a proper striker.

A lot to fix for next season.

After the Barnsley home fixture I posted my opinion that not one of the squad that day would play for Bolton in the Championship.
Anyone disagree?

Spot on about Jalo and Humphreys. They ripped us apart in that first 35 mins. Why can other teams get these stronger players and we can't?

Tbh Barnsley looked better than us all over the park and I'd have a lot of their players over ours, no idea how they're so low in the table.

Fakin humphreys has 2 good games a season !   We somehow manage to make him look like somet special.   (Would still have him before mcatee)

It was fucking braindead taking Cogley off. He's been our best player lately

He was getting bullied by Humphreys in that first half. He's not strong enough against that kind of attacker. Right decision to take him off

Absolutely pal. Cant believe how poor from Tuesdays performance. Feel for the 3500 whites who was there. No WW for 3/4 weeks for me now, on vacation. Spider/ cheese/casino will be gutted! COYFWM! Take care pal.

2 experienced brute centre backs, a couple of hard hitting midfielders and a bullying forward for next season. Not too much to ask for

Who is slagging SS off?

You claim a couple are on 'run down'

He picked em...whoever they are

Fwiw, i have a lot of sympathy for Schumacher with very few options up top

Have you never thought that your a moron?

And someone that is can take a decent free kick and corner. Our set pieces have been shocking this season.

4 injuries in 1 game is seriously bad news for us.

But you was critical of his team selection earlier? Make your mind up!

Just back.  Overall awful.  Game of thirds? First 30 mins as bad as it gets.  Well done SS for changing it.  Next 30mins ok tbh, either side of half time.  If either if our “strikers” had scored just before half time who knows.  Barnsley would have buried those chances.  Last 30mins in effect we’re down to 10 men, so game(& season) over.

Not going to join in slagging various players off.  We know they’re not good enough.  But anyone singing “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” when it went 3-0 ….well, words fail me.  Just don’t bother going.

Didn't watch it but how did Santos do?

Rusty but not much worse than anyone else. Couple of sloppy passes but not individually at fault for either goal.

Maybe it's just how he is but his body language didn't look overly enthusiastic to be playing, so I still think we need to move on.

The problems in this team and mentality have been there since last February, which is why I believe a clear out is needed, and SS needs to be able to rebuild a team in the summer. Maybe some of the players can stay, but it is about state of mentality, some of the defensive errors this season are basic issues, and keep being made, so that has to be a mental attitude issue. Time will tell, we can still make the playoffs, but these players need to grow a set of balls now

That is not one player I would be bothered if they left

We all say a rebuild is needed, but its not that easy! Cant see the board giving SS the money that Evatt spunked. Tough times ahead i think.

They will be out for the remainder but have the summer to recover Morley looks like a long one and  tutu as a dodgy knee so you can probably add them both to victor as long term

Very few I'd be happy to see line up in August, the issue is we're stuck with too many of them

Evatt was right, it’s still the same players. We have all seen what they are capable of when SS first came in, now they have just gone back to their  previous mode.

We just can't handle any kind of physicality.

That's what today boiled down to.

Again I look at another teams forward in Humphries and think he's exactly what we need. There's no reason we couldn't have signed him.

They did a job on us and booted us off the park. We wilt like flowers.

Rinse and repeat.

You posted mid game it was a strange line and formation. I thought it was exactly the same formation we've generally settled into in the last 6 or so games i.e. 532. And we only switched to 4231 after 20 mins when we were getting battered.

And the line up was only 1 player different to last game.

Your last point in this post is more valid - SS has a limited squad he can't do much with. Next season is the one

What was going on in our end when all the stewards ran in near the end of the game?
