I get the sentiment re Derby, although 5 of the top 6 in your table above finished as 5 of the top 6 at the end of the season. So you could have used the same table to suggest that only one team outside the current top 6 will make it into the top 6 come May… 🙃 Quote

Whitesince63 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Not really sure what the best result is tonight. I suppose a draw would be the ideal result or if we believed that Wycombe will eventually slip back as I think they will the maybe a Wycombe win might be best. A county win puts them above us and would give them added confidence for Saturday. I know it’s early days yet points are just as important now as they are later. Quote

I know it’s early days yet points are just as important now as they are later. think it's too early to be looking at the league table. I could be very wrong but I can't imagine either of these two will be near the top 2 come next April. Remember last season Exeter and Port Vale were the top 2 after 10 or so games, one got relegated and the other went about 15 games without a win so a lot will change. A draw or Wycombe win would be best I reckon. Don't want to play Stockport coming off the back of a win. Quote
Traf Posted November 5 Posted November 5 I'm not arsed what the score is between Wycombe and Stockport really, I'm more concerned that we just show up against Stockport. Our squad should be far too good for both of them and virtually of the league if the players apply themselves. Occasionally team selection doesn't help, but by and large when we get rolled over in the bigger games, the blame lies firmly with the players. Quote
bolton va va Posted November 5 Posted November 5 A draw would be the best result for us, with only 2 points going to our rivals......a few injuries /red cards to Stockport would be nice as well. Quote

It is also incumbent upon the manager and coaching staff to ensure selection and preparation is the best it can be. For me, that has been the failing so far- almost an assumption that because our squad might be considered better we should be beating these teams in the way we tend to do with those lower down, or not Derbies. We've all seen how teams will try to nullify our strengths and play on our weaknesses and it's up to the coaching group to account for this. Moreover, they are Evatt's players now, so if they're deemed as failing in those bigger games, then again he has to take some responsibility for that. The playing staff as a whole have time to put those things right, but we will need to see that on Saturday, or the doubts and clamour will return with a vengeance. Quote
gonzo Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Of course the buck stops with the manager. But the players generally get away with murder. Same at any club. Look them red rags from up the road. Same nucleus of players throwing managers under the bus. Quote

You're right in that we've all heard of players not pulling their weight, or being a bad influence etc. I suppose that's what differentiate the very best managers from others. Ferguson and Pep aren't averse to letting players go, when the time is right, and reinvesting and developing. Quote
