Someone said the other day that highlights/goals from the very late 90s have become rare to see. Here's something that fits that bill - and a great derby win over Blackburn at that.

Our banjo playing friends had been relegated the previous season and Brian Kidd as boss did not work out. In early February the dingles came to Bolton with Nathan Blake and Per Frandsen in their ranks. The former scored one of his powerful headers to give them the lead but the rest of the afternoon was ours with goals from Gudni Bergsson, Michael Johansen and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Our tremendous late surge in to the play offs came to naught thanks to Barry Knight - but Big Sam's era was beginning to take shape.

What a great find that is! Right in the middle of that lost era as you say.

Reebok in its pre tall ad boards behind the goal period as well.

There's a few more from that era to post. Chose that one first because it's against those twats.

Yes , we started with a virtual clean slate , and I didn't have a clue where we would finish. But a great start to the season and away we went.

I've got to be honest , I was mighty relieved when Preston beat Birmingham , I think when that match finished I knew we was up.

The preseason tour to Denmark was great trip despite us getting some tonkings, a great bunch of lads on that trip, it was one of the best ever. After the tour couldn’t see us doing anything, just goes to show what a top manager can achieve.

The 1986/7 relegation season is a hot contender for our shittest season ever but there were some bright moments particularly in the first half of the season. One of these was in the sixth game of the season at home to Port Vale on Sept 20. We'd lost four of the previous five games - but before and since it's always seemed that we've had the sign over Vale. They've only ever beaten us once in the league.

On this occasion three first half goals in the sunshine from Tony Caldwell, Steve Elliott and Warren Joyce put Vale to the sword. In the second half the much maligned Mike Salmon (who went on to have a fine career elsewhere) saves a penalty. Bolton 3 Port Vale 0 - a game requested by Dusan.

Happy Easter one and all.

We were never getting more than 4 million for eidur

At that stage, his ankle ? Was still causing him to fail medicals

Chelsea knew that and they were the only ones willing to pay

What really grated at the time was that Leicester had to pay £5.5m to get Akinbiyi from Wolves that same summer. He's four years older than Eidur too.

I never dreamed I'd see them until I found out about the bloke in a Wigan suburb who used to run the video firm who filmed all these. This would have been about 2014. They were Roadrunner's predecessors. It's great that they've been saved for posterity and there's still a load to publish yet.

Hope you can spot yourself on that fencing one night in August 87! 🙂

My good mate at school in Hindley, early 80s, became a camera man doing local games for a video company.  He was always going off to Burnley, Blackpool, Wiganetc (who he supported), used to tell me all the hooligan tales of those times.  Anyway just as we were losing contact in late 80s he was taking over the company, he was called Mark, lived in Hindley - dont suppose its the same bloke?  He used to bump into the Granada crew who thought they could muscle him out of the way, giving him an even worse view from those little TV gantrys, he said Rob McAffrey was really arrogant!

What medical did he fail ? , from getting into our first team he hardly missed a match .

If his ankle was bad enough to fail medicals chelsea certainly weren't going to be chucking 4 million quid away , however much of a steal it was.

Thanks Paul , quite a polished performance that day  .

Mike Salmon with a great save , wasn't it Charlton it went to eventually.

He couldn't pass a medical

So clubs wouldn't get cover on him

Chelsea didn't care

Are you seriously trying to tell me Ken Bates of all people was quite happy to go in blind , on a man who you claim had got a dodgy ankle , and be quite happy to write off 4 Million quid.

I just checked up on Wikipedia. He went to Wrexham from us but then on to Charlton - where he proved his worth with a decade of service up to 1999. From memory we spent £50,000 in the summer of 86. It was £25,000 on Salmon and £25,000 on Steve Elliott. It felt a bit underwhelming at the time - and so it proved. It was the proceeds of the Freight Rover final I guess.

Yes I think he was from round Hindley way but I don't recall his name. I think they were called Easy Video. Only met him the once when I bought the vids off him. Anyway the lost the gig at Bolton in January 88 and that's when Jimmy, from Roadrunner took over and Dave Higson stayed on to do his commentaries too!

I can imagine McAffrey was arrogant somehow!!

Did Felgate replace Salmon before the end of the season.?

Yep. We'd actuallly had Felgate on loan in 85/6 and the main saga of the Summer of 86 was whether we'd get him permanently. We didn't ... but then finally did sign him during 86/7. Of course he'd been on our books as a kid in the early 80s. One of those young players who never played and ended up re-signing for dosh in later years. Mick Whitlow is another example.

My mate had a season compilation ( 1989/90), and I remember they weren't allowed to film at certain grounds.

There were some odd things. Some would let in a camera but not a commentator. Burnley insisted on putting the camera right between the home and away support on the Long End. So of course when Bolton were in town that involved Dave H and other spending all the game dodging flying coins of the realm that were arrowing from one side to another.

Yep , you had to feel sorry for him regarding the FRT final , sadly Simon Farnworth had a bit of a mare.

I think on the video my mate had , it was a black screen saying so and so wouldn't let them film.

He did. He'd been having a mare for about 12 months. There's a game I've got at the Vetch Field in 85/6. We lose 3-1 and you can see he's like a nervous wreck. The fans had got on to him... in that merciless Burnden Park style. Up until then he had been a very promising youngster who hadn't really put a foot wrong.

Didn't Phil Neal come out in the press ripping into him , I'm sure someone mentioned it on here a while ago.
