It was almost double Oldham's average attendance back then. We had some strange attendances back then. Less than 9,000 for the visit of Mansfield, followed by over 42,000 for the next home game when Man City were the visitors in the League Cup. Garry Jones hat trick and the mayhem afterwards was unbelievable. Remember some 'typical Moss side types' wearing berets and flashing cut throat razors about near Orlando Bridge. Remember being on the Lever End early and it was full of Bolton; we heard the city fans coming down the back and they got greated as soon as they came in. Half of them jumped back over the turnstiles to get away. Eventually a few got in and they had police protection throughout until they left early. This was the day I saw a St. Johns make his own work. Chelsea fan kicked him near the half way line and the the SJ hit him with the half way line flag. He then treated the lads bleeding forehead Silly London twats were throwing full (unopened) cans of beer into the BT. Some silly Bolton twats attempted to open and drink them. Mounts Kipper Posted June 30, 2011 Share Posted June 30, 2011 (edited) i seem to remember chelsea swapping ends twice great fun from my vantage point in the burnden stand nowt i saw suggested bolton won either battle Not suprising really as it was before kick off and the Lever End was no where near full, however with the number of Chelsea fans heading across the pitch and plenty of Chelsea already in the Lever it was always going to be a tall order, as a 12-13 year old lad and without any parent supervison I decided the best course of action was to jump over the turnstile and out of the ground, however from somewhere I found the courage to walk round to the Burnden side and pay myself back into the Lever when it had calmed down, I ened up stood on the Burnden side of the Lever end where most of the Bolton fans were entrenched, the Chelsea fans were to the left, the rest of the game there was an uneasy truce on the Lever end, I have no recollection of after match incidents as I was on the 42 bus like a rat up a drainpipe after the game, many times I jumped on that bus as a kid and breathed a massive sigh of relief. From Memory I think one of the older lads posted that there was a bit of history with Bolton and Chelsea from the late 60s early 70s from a match down at stamford bridge, I was also subject to the chelsea thugs who turned up at Fulham for my first London game in about 1975 they ran Bolton on the uncovered end. The same charachters stood there every game and were from dobble. These dobble men had a runner who kept the group well supplied with beer and pies. It was one of that group who decided enough was enough, he leapt into action and jumped over the fence to the pitch to intercept this Chelsea fan enrout to the lever end. What happened next was the funniest thing I have ever seen at a footie game, the Bolton fan decked the Chelsea fan with his pie. Now, nothing funny happens anymore. We never see dogs on the pitch? Didn't a similar set of circumstances arise on the very last day of that season at home to Wolves, in a game we needed to draw to get promoted but lost 0-1? I seem to recall pitch invasions from both Lever End and Embankment? My memories of 76/7 are very fuzzy but by 77/8 (I was then aged 7) my Dad had decided we were going in the Manny Road Stand (the aforementioned riots might have had something to do with it!). I remember 77/8 very clearly - and of course by the start of that year there were fences up on the perimter of both Lever End and Manny Road. During half time after the golden gamble had been read out, a paper dart would always land on the pitch, now you`d end up getting thrown out for doing that. Stupid laws that allow you to take a steaming hot cup of tea or coffee back to your seat but your not allowed to take a beer with you? God do I miss Burnden Park.
