whoareya? Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Dont know if someone else has already said it, but he was lucky.. Inherited the bulk of a team created by Phil Neal (who was v close to getting it right) Two signings made him. we all know who.. Hilariously deluded. Quote
Traf Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 How does one 'jump ship' when out of contract? Are you telling me Allardyce wouldn't have gone to Arsenal if they had come knocking after 3 years? WTF is the point of conjecturing what Rioch may or may not have thought after 7 years? Some people have some fuckin funny ideas And Allardyce was more than happy to snatch our hands off at the offer of a 10 yr contract. Quote
Sweep Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I feel a bit sorry for those who have only ever known Premier League football, as they probably think that is as good as it gets. For me, the times under Rioch were the best. Granted, we had lower expectations, but that's what made it so special. I don't think I'll ever forget that night at Liverpool - I think if Diddles had been there and old enough to appreciate what was going on, he might have exploded. How many fans did we have a Liverpool that night? - probably around 7000, and everyone of them singing their hearts out for the full game. It really hasn't ever been any better than that for me as a Bolton fan..................apart from maybe the Friday night Hull match I certainbly enjoyed the Rioch era a lot more than the last 4 or 5 that we've "enjoyed" in the "best league in the world" Quote
Traf Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I certainbly enjoyed the Rioch era a lot more than the last 4 or 5 that we've "enjoyed" in the "best league in the world" That's why, if we hit the ground running, the fans will back the team next season. Quote

Far more magic than we've seen in the last 4 seasons put together. Quote
Sweep Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 we also beat Everton away as well didn't we, the season after we had beaten Liverpool.......were we 2:0 down and then won 3:2...........or am I getting a bit carried away with myself? Quote

Correct - with DH lauding our manager. Owen, Owen, Owen Owen totally forgetting the words as only DH could do. How could you beat Everton, Arsenal, Villa all in one season then lose a qtr final to bloody Oldham? Quote

Are you thinking of the FA cup replay? I'm still staggered it's 20 years ago. Quote
gonzo Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 we sat in the top balcony for that everton replay.... remember crying when stuart barlow put them 2 up.... step up our owen! Quote
Sweep Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Are you thinking of the FA cup replay? I'm still staggered it's 20 years ago. So am I............ I can't believe we were both going to these away games aged just 8 years old Quote

Never knew that The atmosphere was literally crackling that night even before the game, when we won, leaving the ground singing... amazing... Quote

Sweep Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I was in the Everton directors box, and had a right old do with the bloke who played Harry Cross from Brookside when we scored the second I was also in the Everton end that night (as me and my mate had gone there with an Everton supporting work colleague) and I was sat quite close to John Parrott. At the end of the game he looked as sick as a......erm Quote
Carlos Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 think, another "interesting" fact about that game, we were the last fans to stand on that terrace behind the goal before they made it into seats. Not so interesting but I made an effort to be the last person off the terrace for that reason. Quote

Inherited the bulk of a team created by Phil Neal (who was v close to getting it right) Two signings made him. we all know who.. HAHAHAHAHA thats hilarious. Seriously?? Phil Neal wasn`t far off but may never have got it right. The quality of football we played was turd though. Everything about the Rioch era was magnificent. As already said. for those of us who went home and away during that period it will never get better than that. Quote
gonzo Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 do we all reckon Bruce Rioch would of kept us up had he stayed? Quote
Carlos Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Rioch got backing, like the signing of David Lee, that Phil Neal would never have got. No idea why like. Not sure exactly when Andy Walker signed permanently, before or after Rioch arrived, but with him we were clearly an entirely different proposition. He was the best player in that league by a long, long way. Quote
Biggish Dave Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Andy Walker signed permanently just after we'd beaten Brighton in the FA Cup if I remember rightly which I reckon was about January 1992, maybe the cup run money was used to buy him. Quote
jayjayoghani Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I remember when we signed Andy Walker, I was about 16. It was the first time I'd seen a footballer receive the ball at speed and properly kill it stone dead For anyone a bit younger, we had some REAL shit footballers between 81 and 92 Quote
Sweep Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 we had some REAL shit footballers between 81 and 92 Who do we reckon was the worst "regular" shit playerwe had..............I'll start the ball rolling with Derek Scott Quote

Phil Gartside has gone on record as saying the board made a decision when they appointed Rioch of invest or die, with the combined resurgence of both Blackburn and United at the time. Quote
